Arrhythmia with irregular heartbeats?
Hello doctor, I've been experiencing frequent arrhythmias lately.
My blood pressure and heart rate are usually around 80-100.
Sometimes, a few hours after taking medication, my heart rate drops to the 60s.
Could this be related to the medication? I also feel chest tightness, shortness of breath, dizziness, and occasional sharp pain just above the chest area.
I would like to know if this is related to my heart.

Dr. He Dongjin reply Cardiology
Hello, the pain you are experiencing is mostly not related to heart issues.
After taking the medication, your heart rate drops to the 60s within 2-3 hours, which is likely due to the medication.
Symptoms like chest tightness, shortness of breath, and dizziness may not necessarily indicate a heart problem.
Please take care, and Changhua Hospital is concerned about your well-being.

Irregular heartbeats, also known as arrhythmias, can be concerning and may arise from various underlying causes. Your symptoms of chest tightness, shortness of breath, dizziness, and chest pain, especially after eating, warrant careful consideration and evaluation by a healthcare professional.
Firstly, it is essential to understand that the heart's rhythm can be influenced by numerous factors, including medications, lifestyle choices, and underlying health conditions. The heart rate you mentioned, ranging from 80 to 100 beats per minute, falls within the normal range for many individuals, particularly if you are experiencing stress or anxiety. However, a drop to the 60s after eating could indicate a response to the food intake, particularly if it is heavy or rich in carbohydrates, which can lead to a phenomenon known as postprandial hypotension. This condition occurs when blood pressure drops after eating, causing symptoms like dizziness or lightheadedness.
Regarding your medication, if you are taking beta-blockers like Inderal (propranolol), they can indeed lower your heart rate and may contribute to feelings of fatigue or dizziness, especially if your dosage is not appropriately adjusted for your needs. It is crucial to communicate with your prescribing physician about any side effects you are experiencing, as they may need to reevaluate your treatment plan.
The symptoms of chest tightness and pain can be multifactorial. While they may be related to your heart, they could also stem from gastrointestinal issues, such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), which is common and can mimic cardiac symptoms. Stress and anxiety can also lead to physical symptoms, including chest discomfort and palpitations, which may not be directly related to heart function.
In your case, the combination of irregular heartbeats, chest discomfort, and dizziness suggests that a thorough evaluation is necessary. This evaluation may include an electrocardiogram (ECG) to assess your heart's rhythm, echocardiography to visualize heart structure and function, and possibly a Holter monitor to record your heart's activity over 24 hours. These tests can help determine if there is an underlying arrhythmia or structural heart issue that needs to be addressed.
Additionally, lifestyle factors such as diet, exercise, and stress management play a significant role in heart health. A diet low in processed foods and high in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains can improve overall cardiovascular health. Regular physical activity can help maintain a healthy weight, reduce stress, and improve heart function.
In conclusion, while your symptoms may be related to your heart, they could also be influenced by other factors such as medication, diet, and stress. It is essential to consult with a cardiologist who can perform the necessary evaluations and provide a tailored treatment plan. Do not hesitate to seek medical attention, especially if your symptoms worsen or become more frequent. Your health and well-being are paramount, and addressing these concerns early can lead to better outcomes.
