Post-circumcision issues?

Hello Doctor, I underwent a circumcision (gland) surgery on June 3rd.
The stitches fell out about a week ago, but I can still clearly see some parts of the sutures between the foreskin and the penis during erections.
Although everything is functioning normally at the moment, I am a bit concerned about the visible sutures.
I would like to ask if the sutures will be absorbed on their own after some time, or should I avoid masturbation or sexual activity until the sutures are completely absorbed, even though the stitches have fallen out? Thank you for your response.

Hello: Regarding the type of sutures used, some may dissolve on their own, while others need to be removed, which may require a follow-up appointment.
It is recommended to avoid DIY for at least 2 weeks.
Wishing you good health.

After undergoing a circumcision procedure, it is common to have concerns regarding the recovery process, particularly regarding the stitches used during the surgery. In your case, since the stitches are still visible and you are experiencing some anxiety about their absorption, let’s address your concerns in detail.

Firstly, it is important to understand that there are typically two types of stitches used in circumcision: absorbable and non-absorbable. Absorbable stitches are designed to dissolve over time as the body heals, usually within a few weeks to a couple of months, depending on the type of material used. Non-absorbable stitches, on the other hand, need to be removed by a healthcare professional after a certain period, usually around 7 to 14 days post-surgery. Since you mentioned that the staples (or stitches) fell out about a week ago, it is likely that you had absorbable stitches, which may still be in the process of dissolving.

Regarding your concern about the remaining visible stitches, it is not uncommon for some portions of absorbable stitches to remain for a while after the main stitches have dissolved. These remnants can sometimes be seen or felt, especially during erections. If the stitches are not causing pain, discomfort, or signs of infection (such as redness, swelling, or discharge), it is generally a normal part of the healing process. However, if you notice any unusual symptoms, it is advisable to consult your healthcare provider for a thorough evaluation.

As for engaging in sexual activities or masturbation, it is usually recommended to avoid these activities until you are fully healed. This is to prevent any potential irritation or stress on the surgical site, which could lead to complications such as delayed healing or infection. Most healthcare providers suggest waiting at least 4 to 6 weeks post-surgery before resuming sexual activities, but this can vary based on individual healing and the specific instructions given by your surgeon. It is crucial to follow your surgeon's advice regarding this matter.

To promote optimal healing, consider the following tips:
1. Keep the Area Clean: Gently wash the area with mild soap and water. Avoid using harsh soaps or scrubbing the area too vigorously.

2. Avoid Irritation: Wear loose-fitting underwear to minimize friction against the surgical site. Avoid activities that may cause excessive movement or pressure on the area.

3. Monitor for Signs of Infection: Keep an eye out for any signs of infection, such as increased redness, swelling, warmth, or discharge. If you notice any of these symptoms, contact your healthcare provider immediately.

4. Follow-Up Appointments: Attend any scheduled follow-up appointments with your surgeon to ensure that your healing is progressing as expected.

5. Patience: Healing takes time, and it is essential to be patient with your body as it recovers. Avoid rushing into activities that could jeopardize your healing process.

In conclusion, while it is normal to have visible remnants of absorbable stitches after circumcision, it is essential to monitor your healing and avoid activities that could irritate the area until you receive clearance from your healthcare provider. If you have any further concerns or if the situation changes, do not hesitate to reach out to your surgeon for personalized advice. Your health and comfort during the recovery process are paramount.
