Allergies or insect bites
Hello doctor, I often wake up at night due to itching, which has been ongoing for several months.
At first, I thought it was mosquito bites, as the lesions are quite separated, about 1 cm in size, and are itchy.
Sometimes they appear as hives, and other times as small blisters.
Generally, the itching does not last more than an hour, and it is mostly concentrated around my wrists, lower legs, ankles, and toes.
Over the past few months, I haven't noticed any common biting insects, but I have seen many booklice.
I would like to know if it is possible that the symptoms are caused by an allergy to these insects.

A preliminary assessment can only be made by visualizing the lesion.

Understanding allergic reactions, particularly those related to bites, rashes, and skin irritations, can be quite complex. Your symptoms, which include intense itching, welts, and small blisters, suggest that you may be experiencing an allergic reaction or hypersensitivity to something in your environment. Given that these symptoms have persisted for several months and are localized primarily on your wrists and ankles, it is essential to consider various potential causes.
Firstly, it is indeed possible that your symptoms could be related to insect bites, including those from common pests like mosquitoes or fleas. However, since you mentioned that you have not observed any typical biting insects, it raises the possibility of other allergens or irritants. The presence of booklice (also known as psocids) in your environment could be a contributing factor. While booklice are not known to bite humans, they can indicate a damp environment, which may harbor mold or other allergens that could provoke skin reactions.
Another potential cause of your symptoms could be contact dermatitis, which occurs when the skin reacts to substances it comes into contact with. This could include soaps, detergents, or even materials from clothing or jewelry. If you have recently changed any products you use on your skin or in your home, it might be worth considering whether these could be the culprits.
Additionally, your symptoms could be indicative of a condition known as urticaria, or hives, which can be triggered by various factors, including food allergies, medications, or environmental allergens. Hives typically present as raised, itchy welts that can vary in size and can appear and disappear quickly. The fact that your symptoms do not last more than an hour suggests a possible acute allergic reaction rather than a chronic condition.
To address your concerns, here are some steps you can take:
1. Keep a Symptom Diary: Document when your symptoms occur, what you were doing, and any products you were using at the time. This can help identify potential triggers.
2. Avoid Known Allergens: If you suspect certain products or materials may be causing your reactions, try to eliminate them from your routine to see if your symptoms improve.
3. Consult an Allergist: Given the persistence and nature of your symptoms, it may be beneficial to see an allergist. They can perform tests to identify specific allergens and provide guidance on management strategies.
4. Consider Environmental Factors: Since you mentioned the presence of booklice, it may be worth addressing any moisture issues in your living space. Reducing humidity can help minimize the presence of mold and other allergens.
5. Over-the-Counter Treatments: Antihistamines can help alleviate itching and reduce the severity of allergic reactions. However, consult with a healthcare provider before starting any new medication.
6. Skin Care: Use gentle, fragrance-free skin care products to avoid further irritation. Moisturizing regularly can also help maintain skin barrier function.
In conclusion, while it is possible that your symptoms are related to insect bites or environmental allergens, a thorough evaluation by a healthcare professional is crucial for accurate diagnosis and effective treatment. By taking proactive steps and seeking appropriate medical advice, you can better manage your symptoms and improve your quality of life.
