I have been experiencing intestinal peristalsis and issues with flatulence over the past few days?

Hello, doctor.
I previously asked some questions regarding gastroesophageal reflux, fresh blood on toilet paper after bowel movements, and abdominal tenderness upon palpation.
Currently, these issues have improved.
To rule out any concerns, I have scheduled a painless colonoscopy and gastroscopy, but it will take another month and a half for the examination.
Recently, I have been paying more attention to my diet, consuming more fruits and vegetables, and supplementing with water-soluble dietary fiber (health supplements).
However, a few days ago, I might have taken too much at once, as I have been feeling my intestines moving while sleeping and experiencing frequent burping and flatulence.
Currently, I am burping more often; although it does not lead to abdominal pain, the constant gurgling in my stomach is quite concerning.
The shape of my stool has also been changing.
The day before yesterday, it was fluffy but formed soft stool (with visible fiber from the vegetables), while yesterday it was harder (Bristol Stool Scale Type 2), and today it has returned to soft, crumbly stool (Type 5).
I have stopped taking the water-soluble dietary fiber supplements and am only consuming fruits and vegetables, but I still feel significant intestinal movement, although it is less noticeable at night and more during the day.
I would like to ask if this phenomenon resembles irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)? Additionally, I am concerned about my flatulence; over the past week or two, I have often experienced a pattern of passing one large gas followed immediately by a smaller one.
Is this what is referred to as "chain farting"? Although there is no foul odor, it is still quite concerning.
What could be the common causes of this type of situation? Thank you.

Fruits and vegetables/dietary fiber can promote peristalsis/bowel movements/gas expulsion, so please adjust the intake accordingly.

Understanding bowel movements and gas can be quite complex, especially when considering conditions like Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). Based on your description, it seems you are experiencing a variety of gastrointestinal symptoms, including changes in bowel movements, increased gas, and sensations of bowel activity.
Firstly, IBS is a functional gastrointestinal disorder characterized by a group of symptoms that typically include abdominal pain, bloating, gas, and altered bowel habits (diarrhea, constipation, or alternating between both). The symptoms can vary widely among individuals and can be triggered by dietary choices, stress, and other factors. Given that you have been experiencing changes in your bowel movements and increased gas, it is possible that you may be dealing with IBS, especially if these symptoms have been recurrent and not linked to any specific organic disease.

The fluctuation in the consistency of your stool, as you described (from soft and fluffy to harder forms), is also indicative of IBS. The Bristol Stool Scale categorizes stool types, and your experience of varying stool types suggests that your digestive system may be reacting to dietary changes or other stimuli. The fact that you have recently increased your intake of fruits, vegetables, and soluble fiber could also contribute to these changes. While fiber is essential for healthy digestion, an abrupt increase can lead to gas and bloating, especially if your body is not accustomed to it.
Regarding the sensation of your intestines moving and the increased frequency of burping and passing gas, these symptoms can also be associated with IBS. The increased gas production can result from the fermentation of fiber in the gut, particularly if you have consumed a large amount at once. The phenomenon of passing gas in a sequence, which you referred to as "连环屁" (chain farts), is not uncommon and can occur when gas builds up in the intestines and is released in bursts. This can happen due to the way gas accumulates in the intestines, often influenced by diet and gut motility.

It's important to note that while IBS is a common diagnosis, it is essential to rule out other potential gastrointestinal issues, especially given your history of gastrointestinal symptoms and the upcoming endoscopic examinations. Conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), infections, or even food intolerances (like lactose intolerance or gluten sensitivity) can present with similar symptoms.
In the meantime, it may be beneficial to keep a food diary to track what you eat and how it correlates with your symptoms. This can help identify specific triggers. Gradually reintroducing fiber into your diet rather than making sudden changes can also help your digestive system adjust more comfortably. Additionally, staying hydrated and engaging in regular physical activity can support digestive health.

If your symptoms persist or worsen, or if you experience new symptoms such as significant weight loss, persistent abdominal pain, or changes in appetite, it is crucial to follow up with your healthcare provider for further evaluation. They may recommend additional tests or dietary modifications tailored to your specific needs.
In summary, while your symptoms could suggest IBS, it is essential to consider the broader context of your health and to continue monitoring your symptoms as you await further medical evaluation.
