Is It Normal for a Mole to Regrow After Removal Surgery? - Dermatology

Post-mole removal growth?

Hello, doctor.
I have a mole on my face that developed later in life.
It started as two separate moles but gradually merged together over time and has become larger and more raised (about 2mm).
Recently, it started bleeding suddenly, so I went to a clinic where the doctor recommended that I get it checked at a larger hospital.
However, by the time I saw a doctor at the hospital, the wound on the mole had already healed.
The doctor suggested surgery for a definitive solution, but since it appeared benign, no biopsy was necessary.
About two weeks after the surgery, the sutured wound still hasn't fully healed, and I've noticed that the mole has grown back.
Is this normal? Thank you!

Is it confirmed that the mole has grown back? You should discuss this with the surgeon.

After the surgical removal of a mole, it is not uncommon for patients to be concerned about the possibility of regrowth. In your case, where a mole was surgically excised and you have observed regrowth, it is important to understand the factors that can contribute to this phenomenon.

Firstly, the regrowth of a mole after surgical removal can occur, but it is relatively rare, especially if the mole was completely excised. When a mole is removed, the goal is to take out the entire lesion along with a margin of healthy skin to ensure that any potentially abnormal cells are also removed. If the mole was indeed benign and the excision was complete, the likelihood of regrowth is low. However, there are several reasons why a mole might appear to regrow:
1. Incomplete Excision: If the mole was not completely removed during the surgery, remnants of the mole could remain in the skin, leading to what appears to be regrowth. This is particularly relevant if the mole had deep roots or if the excision did not include a sufficient margin of healthy tissue.

2. Scar Tissue Formation: Sometimes, the healing process can create scar tissue that may resemble a mole or a bump. This can occur if the wound heals unevenly or if there is an accumulation of scar tissue at the site of the excision.

3. New Growth: In some cases, new moles can develop in the same area where a mole was previously removed. This is not technically regrowth but rather the formation of a new mole.

4. Skin Changes: The skin can undergo changes due to various factors such as hormonal fluctuations, sun exposure, or other environmental influences, which might lead to the appearance of new lesions.

Given your situation, where the mole was deemed benign and the surgery was performed, it is advisable to follow up with your healthcare provider. They may recommend a thorough examination of the area to determine whether the new growth is indeed a regrowth of the original mole, a new mole, or scar tissue. If there is any uncertainty, they may suggest a biopsy to rule out any atypical cells or malignancy.

In conclusion, while it is not typical for a mole to regrow after complete surgical removal, it can happen under certain circumstances. It is essential to monitor the area for any changes and consult with your healthcare provider for an accurate assessment and appropriate management. Regular skin checks and being aware of any changes in your skin can help in early detection of any potential issues.

Dr. Yang Zhiya reply Dermatology
Some moles are deeper, and it may not be possible to excise them completely during removal. Generally speaking, if the initial report is benign, there is less cause for concern. However, it is advisable to follow up with the physician who performed the excision for a check-up.

Dr. Du Zhiqiang reply Dermatology
It is possible for a mole to regrow after excision if the removal was not deep enough (as it is difficult to visually assess the depth of the mole). Since it is benign, you can return to the original hospital for another procedure without worrying about Dr. Du's follow-up.

Understanding Healing After Mole Removal Surgery: What to Expect

Hello, I would like to ask about a procedure I had at the end of January to remove a raised mole. Even now, I can still see a small line or gap. Could it be that the skin on each side is healing separately and not coming together? What should I do about this?

Dr. Zhou Hongzhang reply Plastic Surgery
1. The recovery period for scars is approximately 1 year. 2. During this time, you can start caring for the scars to see how they improve. 3. If the scars are still very noticeable after 1 year, other treatment options can be considered.
