Mole on the anus?
Hello, doctor.
Recently, I noticed three moles at the folds of my anus, each measuring about 0.1 to 0.2 cm.
I would like to know if it is normal to have moles in the anal area.
Is there a possibility of them becoming cancerous? Do they need to be removed? Thank you.

More Info
Moles, or nevi, can appear on various parts of the body, including the anal area. While it is not uncommon to have moles in this region, there are several factors to consider regarding their appearance, potential risks, and whether removal is necessary.
Normalcy of Moles Near the Anus
Moles are generally benign growths of skin cells that can vary in color, size, and shape. They can be present at birth or develop over time due to sun exposure or other factors. The presence of moles near the anus is not inherently abnormal. However, the anal region is sensitive and can be prone to various skin conditions, including moles, skin tags, and other lesions.
Risks of Moles Near the Anus
While most moles are harmless, there are certain risks associated with any skin growth, particularly in sensitive areas like the anus. The primary concern is the potential for malignancy. Although the likelihood of a mole near the anus being cancerous is low, it is essential to monitor any changes in the mole's appearance, such as:
- Asymmetry: One half of the mole does not match the other.
- Border irregularity: The edges are ragged, notched, or blurred.
- Color variation: The color is not uniform and may include shades of brown, black, or even red or white.
- Diameter: The mole is larger than 6mm (about the size of a pencil eraser).
- Evolving: The mole changes in size, shape, or color over time.
If you notice any of these changes, it is crucial to seek medical advice.
Cancer Risk
Moles can potentially develop into melanoma, a serious form of skin cancer, although this is rare in the anal region. Factors that may increase the risk of skin cancer include a family history of skin cancer, a personal history of atypical moles, and excessive sun exposure. Regular skin checks and awareness of changes in your skin can help in early detection.
When to Consider Removal
The decision to remove a mole should be based on several factors:
1. Appearance: If the mole is changing in appearance or causing discomfort, it may be advisable to have it evaluated by a healthcare professional.
2. Symptoms: If the mole is itchy, painful, or bleeding, it should be examined.
3. Cosmetic Reasons: Some individuals may choose to remove moles for cosmetic reasons, especially if they are in a visible area or cause self-consciousness.
Consultation with a Healthcare Professional
It is recommended to consult a dermatologist or a healthcare provider for a thorough evaluation of the moles near your anus. They may perform a physical examination and, if necessary, a biopsy to determine whether the mole is benign or requires further treatment.
In summary, while having moles near the anus can be normal, it is essential to monitor them for any changes and consult a healthcare professional if you have concerns. Early detection and intervention are key in managing any potential risks associated with skin growths.
