What exactly is an ingrown eyelash?

Hello Dr.
Ke: I discovered I had flashes of light when I was in the fourth grade, but at that time, the doctor also told me that I had ingrown eyelashes.
He only mentioned that the eyelashes were growing inward and advised me to come back for double eyelid surgery when I turned 17.
Now I am 16, and my 17th birthday is just around the corner.
I'm unsure whether to go through with it.
Can double eyelid surgery really fix ingrown eyelashes? I would appreciate your time in answering my question! Thank you!

Dr. Ke Meilan reply Ophthalmology

Hello: The flashes in the peripheral vision are usually caused by vitreous degeneration, which pulls on the retina.
As for the entropion, it is important to consider whether there is a sensation of foreign body presence and if there is any corneal abrasion, as these factors serve as the basis for surgical intervention.
Sincerely, Dr.
Ke Mei-Lan, Ophthalmology Department.

Double eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, is primarily performed to create a crease in the upper eyelid, which can enhance the aesthetic appearance of the eyes. However, when it comes to addressing inverted eyelashes (also known as entropion), the situation is a bit more complex.

Inverted eyelashes occur when the eyelashes grow inward towards the eye, which can lead to irritation, discomfort, and potential damage to the cornea. This condition is often caused by factors such as aging, scarring, or congenital issues. While double eyelid surgery can change the structure of the eyelid and may provide some improvement in eyelash positioning, it is not a definitive solution for inverted eyelashes.

If you are considering double eyelid surgery primarily to address inverted eyelashes, it is crucial to consult with a qualified ophthalmologist or oculoplastic surgeon. They can assess the specific nature of your inverted eyelashes and recommend the most appropriate treatment. In some cases, additional procedures may be necessary to correct the eyelash position effectively.

For example, if the inverted eyelashes are causing significant discomfort or vision problems, a more targeted approach, such as a procedure to reposition the eyelashes or correct the eyelid's anatomy, may be required. This could involve techniques such as eyelash epilation (removing the problematic lashes), eyelid tightening, or even surgical correction of the eyelid margin.

It's also important to consider the timing of any surgical intervention. At 16 years old, your eyes and facial structures are still developing. Surgeons often recommend waiting until the age of 18 or older for cosmetic procedures to ensure that the results are stable and satisfactory.
In summary, while double eyelid surgery may have some impact on the appearance of inverted eyelashes, it is not a guaranteed solution. A thorough evaluation by a specialist is essential to determine the best course of action for your specific situation. They can provide insights into whether double eyelid surgery is appropriate for you or if other treatments would be more effective in addressing your concerns about inverted eyelashes. Always prioritize your eye health and comfort when making decisions about surgical interventions.
