I feel something unusual in my throat?
Hello Doctor, since yesterday I have been feeling something unusual at the junction of the upper right side of my throat and my jaw.
It doesn’t affect my ability to eat, but it feels strange.
Occasionally, I experience a subtle pressure and a tight sensation in my throat.
About a month ago, I felt like I had a fishbone stuck in my throat after eating fish, but after undergoing a nasopharyngoscopy and X-rays, the doctors found no fishbone.
The doctor suggested it might be post-nasal drip.
Recently, I have also experienced a sensation of fullness and pressure in my ears at times, and occasionally when swallowing, it feels slightly obstructed.
Additionally, I sometimes feel a brief pain on the outer side of my right chest, but it disappears quickly.
Therefore, I would like to ask you what might be causing these symptoms.
I am a bit worried that a fishbone might have been missed, or if it is indeed post-nasal drip, or if my anxiety is causing autonomic nervous system dysregulation.
Thank you for your help, Doctor.

More Info
Hello! It sounds like you’re experiencing a range of symptoms that are understandably causing you concern. Let’s break down what you’re feeling and explore some possible causes and considerations.
From your description, you have discomfort in your throat, particularly on the right side, which extends to the area near your jaw. You mentioned that eating doesn’t seem to exacerbate the discomfort, but you do experience occasional mild pain and a sensation of tightness in your throat. Additionally, you’ve noted some feelings of pressure in your ears and a sensation of something being stuck when swallowing, along with brief chest discomfort.
Possible Causes
1. Post-Nasal Drip: As your doctor suggested, post-nasal drip can cause throat discomfort. This occurs when mucus from the nasal passages drips down the back of the throat, leading to irritation. It can also cause a sensation of fullness in the ears due to the connection between the throat and the Eustachian tubes, which can lead to feelings of pressure.
2. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): If you have acid reflux, it can lead to throat irritation and a sensation of tightness. This can also cause discomfort in the chest area, which might explain the brief pain you’re feeling.
3. Muscle Tension: Anxiety and stress can lead to muscle tension in the neck and throat, which might cause discomfort and the sensation of tightness. If you’re feeling anxious about your symptoms, this could exacerbate the physical sensations you’re experiencing.
4. Throat Irritation: Given that you mentioned a previous incident with a fish bone, it’s possible that there was some irritation or minor injury to your throat that hasn’t fully healed. Even if imaging showed no foreign body, inflammation can persist.
5. Ear Issues: The sensation of pressure in your ears could be related to Eustachian tube dysfunction, which can occur with allergies, sinus issues, or even throat problems.
Recommendations
- Follow-Up with a Specialist: If your symptoms persist or worsen, it may be beneficial to see an Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) specialist. They can perform a thorough examination and may use tools like a laryngoscope to visualize your throat more clearly.
- Manage Anxiety: If you suspect that anxiety is contributing to your symptoms, consider techniques to manage stress, such as mindfulness, breathing exercises, or even speaking with a mental health professional.
- Hydration and Humidification: Ensure you’re staying well-hydrated, as this can help soothe throat irritation. Using a humidifier can also help if dry air is a factor.
- Dietary Adjustments: If you suspect GERD, consider avoiding spicy or acidic foods, and try to eat smaller meals to see if that alleviates your symptoms.
- Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of when your symptoms occur and any potential triggers. This information can be helpful for your healthcare provider in determining the cause.
When to Seek Immediate Care
If you experience severe pain, difficulty breathing, or swallowing, or if your symptoms significantly worsen, seek medical attention promptly. These could be signs of a more serious condition that requires immediate evaluation.
In conclusion, while your symptoms may be concerning, there are several potential explanations that are not necessarily serious. It’s important to communicate openly with your healthcare provider about your symptoms and any anxiety you may be feeling. They can help guide you through the next steps and provide reassurance. Take care!
