Unusual Urine Color: Is It a Side Effect of Medication or Kidney Issue? - Internal Medicine

The color of the urine seems unusual?

I would like to ask a question.
I have a long-standing habit of constipation.
About six months ago, I took herbal pills prescribed by a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner, but the results were not very good, and I have become reliant on medication to have bowel movements.
Therefore, I started going to the hospital for examinations.
The doctor prescribed a medication called (Laxative) for me, stating that it is plant-based and has been effective.
However, since I started taking the medication, my urine has changed color to a strange orange-red.
I asked the doctor if this could be caused by the medication, and I would like to know if this indicates a problem with my kidneys.

Hello: In response to your question, the description of orange-red urine after taking a laxative requires further evaluation through a urinalysis to determine the possibility of hematuria or other renal abnormalities.
You may consider discontinuing the laxative and monitoring any changes in urine color, and it is advisable to consult a nephrologist for the interpretation of the urinalysis results.

Unusual urine color can indeed be a cause for concern, and it is understandable that you are worried about the changes you have observed since starting the medication called "Laxative" (樂瑪可). The color of urine can be influenced by various factors, including hydration levels, diet, medications, and underlying health conditions.
In your case, the orange-red color of your urine could potentially be linked to the medication you are taking. Some medications, particularly those that contain certain dyes or compounds, can cause urine to change color. For example, phenazopyridine, a medication often used to relieve urinary tract discomfort, is known to turn urine a bright orange. While "Laxative" is a plant-based medication, it is still possible that it contains ingredients that can affect urine color. It is essential to consult with your healthcare provider about this change, as they can provide specific insights based on the formulation of the medication you are taking.

Additionally, dehydration can lead to concentrated urine, which may appear darker or more intensely colored. If you are not drinking enough fluids, this could also contribute to the orange-red hue. It is crucial to maintain adequate hydration, especially when taking medications that may have a diuretic effect or when experiencing constipation, as dehydration can exacerbate these issues.

On the other hand, while medication and hydration are common causes of changes in urine color, it is also important to consider the possibility of underlying health issues, particularly concerning kidney function. The kidneys play a vital role in filtering waste products from the blood and regulating fluid balance. If there is a problem with kidney function, it could potentially lead to changes in urine color, consistency, or volume. However, it is important to note that changes in urine color alone are not definitive indicators of kidney problems. Other symptoms, such as swelling, changes in urination frequency, or pain, would also be relevant to consider.

Given your history of long-term constipation and the recent changes in your urine color, it would be prudent to follow up with your healthcare provider. They may recommend a urinalysis or other tests to assess your kidney function and rule out any potential issues. Additionally, they can evaluate whether the medication you are taking is contributing to the changes you are experiencing.

In summary, while the orange-red color of your urine may be related to the medication you are taking, it is essential to consult with your healthcare provider to ensure that there are no underlying health concerns. They can provide guidance on whether any further testing is necessary and help you determine the best course of action for your overall health and well-being. Remember, it is always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to changes in your body, especially when it involves something as vital as kidney function.
