Irregular menstrual cycle
Could you please tell me if there are any traditional Chinese medicines that can help with menstruation (to promote a clean discharge)? I have a thicker than normal uterine lining and experience abnormal menstrual bleeding, but my tests (blood and urine) have come back normal.

Dr. Yan Sumei reply Traditional Chinese Medicine
Abnormal bleeding that occurs intermittently between menstrual periods and does not resolve promptly may require the use of hemostatic medications to help it conclude, while also considering the individual's constitution of cold, heat, deficiency, and excess.
If the bleeding occurs during ovulation, it is usually caused by endocrine disorders leading to insufficient energy in the body, which can result in inadequate hormonal levels and disrupt the menstrual cycle.
In such cases, traditional Chinese medicine that supplements qi and blood to enhance physical vitality can be used for effective management.

Irregular menstruation can be a challenging issue for many women, and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) offers various herbal remedies that may help regulate menstrual cycles and address underlying imbalances. In TCM, menstrual irregularities are often attributed to disharmony in the body's Qi (energy), Blood, and Yin, as well as the influence of external factors such as stress, diet, and lifestyle.
For your specific situation, where you have a thicker uterine lining and experience abnormal bleeding, it is essential to approach treatment with caution and under the guidance of a qualified TCM practitioner. Here are some commonly used TCM herbal remedies that may be beneficial for regulating menstruation:
1. Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis): Often referred to as "female ginseng," Dang Gui is known for its ability to nourish and invigorate the Blood. It is commonly used to treat menstrual disorders, including irregular cycles and excessive bleeding. It helps to promote blood circulation and can alleviate symptoms associated with menstrual discomfort.
2. Chuan Xiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong): This herb is frequently used in TCM to invigorate Blood circulation and alleviate pain. It is particularly effective for conditions related to Blood stagnation, which can contribute to irregular menstruation. Chuan Xiong is often combined with other herbs to enhance its effects.
3. Bai Shao (Paeonia Lactiflora): Bai Shao is known for its ability to nourish the Blood and regulate the Liver. It is often used in formulas to help balance the menstrual cycle and alleviate symptoms such as cramping and mood swings. It can also help to soften the uterine lining, which may be beneficial in your case.
4. Wu Zhu Yu (Evodia Rutaecarpa): This herb is used to warm the interior and dispel cold, which can be beneficial if your irregular menstruation is related to a deficiency of Yang energy. It can help to regulate the menstrual cycle and alleviate symptoms of coldness in the body.
5. Xiang Fu (Cyperus Rotundus): Known for its ability to regulate Qi and relieve stagnation, Xiang Fu is often used to treat menstrual irregularities caused by emotional stress or Liver Qi stagnation. It can help to promote a smoother flow of menstruation.
6. Gui Zhi (Cinnamon Twig): This warming herb is often used to promote circulation and dispel cold. It can be beneficial for women who experience irregular menstruation due to cold conditions in the body.
In addition to these herbs, TCM practitioners often use customized herbal formulas tailored to the individual's specific condition. It is crucial to consult with a licensed TCM practitioner who can assess your unique situation, including your constitution, symptoms, and any underlying imbalances. They can create a personalized herbal formula that addresses your irregular menstruation while considering your thicker uterine lining.
Moreover, lifestyle factors such as diet, stress management, and exercise play a significant role in menstrual health. Incorporating a balanced diet rich in whole foods, managing stress through practices like meditation or yoga, and maintaining a regular exercise routine can support overall hormonal balance and menstrual regularity.
It is also essential to monitor your symptoms closely and communicate any changes to your healthcare provider. If you experience severe symptoms or if your irregular menstruation persists, further evaluation may be necessary to rule out any underlying medical conditions.
In summary, TCM offers a holistic approach to managing irregular menstruation through herbal remedies and lifestyle modifications. By working with a qualified practitioner, you can explore effective options tailored to your needs and promote a healthier menstrual cycle.
