Menstrual issues?

Dear Doctor: I had sexual intercourse with my girlfriend on January 26th, and we used a condom.
The next day, January 27th, my girlfriend got her period, which lasted until February 2nd.
Today, her period still hasn't arrived.
Is it possible for her to be pregnant, or could her menstrual cycle be irregular? What should we do next? Is using a pregnancy test accurate?

Lin, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2004/03/13

If the menstrual period is normal from January 27 to February 2, then having sexual intercourse on January 26 should not result in pregnancy.
However, if the period from January 27 to February 2 is not a normal menstrual cycle, then it is uncertain, and a pregnancy test should be taken.

Understanding menstrual irregularities and pregnancy concerns can be quite complex, especially when it involves a recent sexual encounter and subsequent changes in menstrual patterns. In your case, you mentioned that you had sexual intercourse with your girlfriend on January 26, and she got her period the very next day, January 27. This is a crucial detail because it suggests that she was likely not ovulating at the time of intercourse, which significantly reduces the chances of pregnancy.

Menstrual cycles can be affected by various factors, including stress, hormonal changes, diet, and lifestyle. If your girlfriend's period was regular prior to this incident, the sudden delay in her menstrual cycle could be due to several reasons, including stress or anxiety about the possibility of pregnancy, changes in her routine, or even underlying health issues. It's also worth noting that menstrual cycles can naturally vary in length from month to month, and a missed period does not automatically indicate pregnancy.

Regarding the use of condoms, while they are generally effective in preventing pregnancy when used correctly, no contraceptive method is 100% foolproof. However, since your girlfriend had her period shortly after the sexual encounter, it is unlikely that she is pregnant.
If her period does not return soon, using a home pregnancy test (HPT) can provide clarity. Home pregnancy tests are designed to detect the hormone hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), which is produced during pregnancy. For the most accurate results, it is advisable to wait until at least one week after the missed period to take the test. This allows enough time for hCG levels to rise if she is pregnant. Most modern pregnancy tests are quite sensitive and can provide reliable results when used correctly.

If the test is negative and her period still does not arrive, it may be wise for her to consult a healthcare provider. A doctor can perform a more sensitive blood test for pregnancy and evaluate any other potential causes for the missed period. Additionally, they can provide guidance on menstrual health and any necessary follow-up care.

In summary, based on the information provided, it seems unlikely that your girlfriend is pregnant given that she had her period shortly after the sexual encounter. However, if her period remains absent, using a home pregnancy test and consulting a healthcare professional would be prudent next steps. Understanding the factors that can influence menstrual cycles can also help alleviate any concerns you both may have regarding this situation.
