Did not come???

Hello, I would like to ask again...
My menstrual periods were on January 9 and February 13, but I haven't gotten my period this month.
Is it possible that I am pregnant? However, I feel like my pants are damp, which seems like a sign that my period is about to come.
How long will it take to know if I am pregnant? Would it be more accurate to take a pregnancy test in a few days? Thank you!

Jing, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2004/03/15

Dr. Zhan Deqin reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

You can take a urine test now; if you are pregnant, it should be detectable.

When it comes to understanding the possibility of pregnancy, especially in the context of a delayed period, there are several factors to consider. Based on your menstrual history, you mentioned that your last periods were on January 9 and February 13, and now you are experiencing a delay in March. Given that your menstrual cycle appears to be relatively regular, a missed period can certainly raise questions about potential pregnancy.

First, it’s important to understand the timing of ovulation and conception. Ovulation typically occurs about 14 days before your next expected period. If your cycle is around 28 days, ovulation would likely occur around the middle of your cycle, which would be approximately February 27 for a March 13 expected period. If you had unprotected intercourse around this time, there is a possibility of conception.

Regarding your symptoms, you mentioned feeling wetness in your underwear, which could be a sign of impending menstruation or could also be related to other factors, including hormonal changes. It’s not uncommon for women to experience various physical sensations leading up to their period, which can sometimes be confused with early pregnancy symptoms.

To determine whether you are pregnant, the most reliable method is to take a home pregnancy test. These tests work by detecting the hormone hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), which is produced shortly after a fertilized egg attaches to the uterine lining. For the most accurate results, it is recommended to take the test after your period is missed, ideally using the first morning urine, as it contains the highest concentration of hCG.

If your period is delayed by a week or more, it would be a good time to take a pregnancy test. If the test is negative but your period still does not arrive, it may be advisable to wait a few more days and test again. If you continue to experience a delay in your period and negative test results, it would be wise to consult with a healthcare provider. They can perform a blood test, which is more sensitive than home tests, and can also evaluate other potential causes for your missed period, such as stress, hormonal imbalances, or other medical conditions.

Stress and lifestyle factors can significantly impact your menstrual cycle. High levels of stress, changes in weight, excessive exercise, or even changes in sleep patterns can lead to delayed or missed periods. If you are experiencing stress due to exams or other life events, this could be a contributing factor to your delayed menstruation.

In summary, while there is a possibility of pregnancy given your missed period, it is essential to conduct a pregnancy test for confirmation. If the test is negative and your period does not arrive, consider factors such as stress and lifestyle changes, and consult a healthcare provider for further evaluation. Remember, it’s always best to listen to your body and seek professional advice when in doubt.
