Astigmatism

When I got my glasses, I didn't have the astigmatism correction included.
Does this affect my vision? Also, when I look at objects, I see double images, and the lights on the road appear as oval-shaped double images.
Is this astigmatism? Can it be corrected with surgery?

Xiao P, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2004/04/06

Dr. Ke Meilan reply Ophthalmology

Hello:
1.
If there is mild astigmatism with a horizontal axis, not correcting it will have minimal impact.

2.
Double vision in one eye is likely due to astigmatism.

3.
Surgery can treat it, but I cannot guarantee complete elimination of astigmatism.

Sincerely, Dr.

Astigmatism is a common refractive error in the eye, characterized by an irregular curvature of the cornea or lens, which leads to blurred or distorted vision. Understanding the symptoms, effects, and treatment options for astigmatism is crucial for managing this condition effectively.

Symptoms of Astigmatism
The symptoms of astigmatism can vary from person to person, but they typically include:
1. Blurred or Distorted Vision: This is the hallmark symptom of astigmatism. Objects may appear blurry at any distance, and this blurriness can be more pronounced when looking at fine details.

2. Double Vision: As you mentioned, experiencing double vision or seeing halos around lights can be indicative of astigmatism. This occurs because the light rays entering the eye are not focused evenly, leading to multiple images.

3. Eye Strain: People with astigmatism often experience discomfort or fatigue in their eyes, especially after prolonged periods of reading or using screens.

4. Headaches: Frequent headaches can occur due to the extra effort required to focus on objects clearly.

5. Difficulty with Night Vision: Many individuals with astigmatism find it challenging to see well at night, as lights may appear to have halos or streaks.

Effects of Astigmatism
If left untreated, astigmatism can significantly impact daily activities, including reading, driving, and other tasks that require clear vision. It can also lead to complications such as amblyopia (lazy eye) in children, where one eye does not develop proper vision due to the brain favoring the other eye.

Treatment Options
1. Eyeglasses: The most common treatment for astigmatism is corrective lenses. Eyeglasses with cylindrical lenses can help focus light correctly on the retina, improving vision. If you did not receive a prescription for astigmatism during your eye exam, it may be worth discussing with your eye care professional, as this could explain the double vision and distorted images you are experiencing.

2. Contact Lenses: Toric contact lenses are specifically designed to correct astigmatism. They have different powers in different meridians of the lens, allowing for better vision correction.

3. Refractive Surgery: Procedures such as LASIK or PRK can reshape the cornea to correct astigmatism. These surgeries have become increasingly popular and effective, providing long-term solutions for many patients. However, not everyone is a candidate for surgery, so a thorough evaluation by an eye care specialist is necessary.

4. Orthokeratology: This is a non-surgical option that involves wearing specially designed contact lenses overnight to temporarily reshape the cornea, allowing for clearer vision during the day without the need for glasses or contacts.

Conclusion
In your case, the presence of double vision and the perception of lights appearing oval or distorted could indeed be related to astigmatism. It is essential to consult with an eye care professional who can conduct a comprehensive eye exam to determine the exact cause of your symptoms and provide appropriate treatment options. If corrective lenses do not alleviate your symptoms, discussing surgical options may be beneficial. Remember, early intervention can help prevent further complications and improve your quality of life.
