Itching?

Hello, I would like to ask about itching above my labia majora (not in a specific spot where there is a bump), where I have developed a small bump, just one.
This has only occurred in the past few days (but I haven't had sexual intercourse recently).
Additionally, I used to experience itching before my menstrual period.
Could you please explain why this is happening?

AABY, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2001/02/05

Dr. Zhan Deqin reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

1.
It could be folliculitis; please visit a gynecologist for an examination, which is advisable.
2.
Immunity tends to be lower before menstruation, making it easier to get infections, which can cause itching.

More Info

Itching in the labia, particularly in the area above the labia majora, can be a common concern for many individuals and can arise from various causes. Understanding the underlying reasons for this itching is essential for addressing the issue effectively.

Common Causes of Itching in the Labia
1. Irritation or Allergic Reactions: One of the most common causes of itching in the genital area is irritation from soaps, detergents, or personal hygiene products. Scented products, including feminine hygiene sprays, can cause allergic reactions leading to itching. It's advisable to use unscented and hypoallergenic products to minimize irritation.

2. Infections: Various infections can lead to itching in the labial area. Yeast infections, for instance, are characterized by intense itching, redness, and sometimes a thick, white discharge. Bacterial vaginosis can also cause itching and an unusual discharge. Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) such as herpes or trichomoniasis may present with itching, sores, or unusual discharge as well.

3. Hormonal Changes: Hormonal fluctuations, particularly those associated with the menstrual cycle, can lead to changes in vaginal secretions and pH levels, resulting in itching. Many women report increased sensitivity and itching in the days leading up to their menstrual period due to hormonal shifts.

4. Skin Conditions: Conditions such as eczema or psoriasis can affect the genital area, leading to itching and discomfort. These conditions may require specific treatments to manage symptoms effectively.

5. Ingrown Hairs or Folliculitis: If you have noticed a small bump in the area, it could be an ingrown hair or folliculitis, which is the inflammation of hair follicles. This can occur after shaving or waxing and may be accompanied by itching and redness.

6. Lichen Sclerosus: This is a chronic skin condition that can cause white patches and itching in the genital area. It is more common in postmenopausal women but can occur at any age.

When to Seek Medical Attention
While occasional itching may not be a cause for concern, persistent or severe itching, especially if accompanied by other symptoms such as unusual discharge, sores, or bleeding, warrants a visit to a healthcare provider. A thorough examination can help determine the underlying cause and appropriate treatment.

Recommendations
1. Avoid Irritants: Switch to unscented soaps and avoid using douches or other vaginal products that may disrupt the natural flora of the vagina.

2. Maintain Hygiene: Keep the area clean and dry. Wearing breathable cotton underwear can help reduce moisture and irritation.

3. Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of any additional symptoms that may develop, such as changes in discharge, odor, or the appearance of sores.

4. Consult a Healthcare Provider: If the itching persists or worsens, or if you notice any concerning symptoms, it is essential to consult a healthcare provider for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan.

In conclusion, while itching in the labia can be caused by various factors, understanding these causes can help in managing the symptoms effectively. If you have concerns about a specific bump or persistent itching, seeking medical advice is the best course of action to ensure your health and well-being.
