Menstruation has not yet arrived?

My last menstrual period started on March 22nd, and today is March 28th, but my period hasn't arrived yet.
This is unusual for me as I usually have a regular cycle.
I have also taken a pregnancy test, which came back negative.
Over the past few days, I've been experiencing sensations in my abdomen similar to menstrual cramps, but they are brief and there is no bleeding.
What could be the reason for this? Should I get an ultrasound?

nini, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2004/04/28

There are many factors that can affect menstruation, with pregnancy being the most significant.
Other factors such as exercise, emotions, medications, and stress can also play a role.
If your period does not arrive after a couple of days, you can take another pregnancy test or undergo an ultrasound.

There are several reasons why your period might be late, especially if you typically have a regular cycle. Since you mentioned that your last period was on March 22 and today is March 28, it is still relatively early in your cycle, but it’s understandable to be concerned if your period is usually punctual. Here are some common reasons for a late period:
1. Pregnancy: Although you mentioned that you have taken a pregnancy test and it was negative, it’s worth noting that testing too early can sometimes yield a false negative. If you suspect you might still be pregnant, consider retesting a few days later or consulting a healthcare provider.

2. Stress: High levels of stress can significantly affect your menstrual cycle. Stress can lead to hormonal imbalances that may delay ovulation and, consequently, your period. If you’ve been experiencing increased stress, this could be a contributing factor.

3. Weight Changes: Significant weight loss or gain can impact your menstrual cycle. If you have recently changed your diet or exercise routine, this might affect your hormones and lead to a delayed period.

4. Hormonal Imbalances: Conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or thyroid disorders can cause irregularities in your menstrual cycle. If you have a history of hormonal issues, this could be a factor.

5. Illness: Acute illnesses or chronic health conditions can also affect your menstrual cycle. If you’ve been unwell recently, this could be a reason for your late period.

6. Medications: Certain medications, including hormonal contraceptives, can affect your menstrual cycle. If you have started or changed any medications recently, this could be a reason for the delay.

7. Perimenopause: If you are in your late 30s or early 40s, you might be experiencing perimenopause, which can lead to irregular periods as your body transitions to menopause.

Regarding the sensations you are experiencing in your abdomen, it is not uncommon to feel premenstrual symptoms, such as cramping or bloating, even if your period is late. These symptoms can be caused by hormonal fluctuations in your body.

As for whether you need an ultrasound, it depends on your specific situation. If your period does not arrive in the next week or if you continue to experience unusual symptoms, such as severe pain, heavy bleeding, or other concerning signs, it would be wise to consult a healthcare provider. They may recommend an ultrasound or other tests to rule out any underlying conditions.

In summary, while a late period can be concerning, there are many potential explanations. If your period does not arrive soon or if you have additional symptoms that worry you, seeking medical advice is the best course of action. A healthcare provider can help determine the cause of your late period and suggest appropriate treatment or further evaluation if necessary.
