Weakness in the limbs?
Hello Doctor: My friend is a 25-year-old female.
A few days ago, she experienced weakness in her hands.
Since it was the day after her first yoga practice, she thought it was related to that.
However, two days later, she found it difficult to press the brakes while riding her scooter, and eventually, she experienced weakness in both her hands and legs, making it hard for her to walk.
She feels like her legs give out and she falls down, and she is unable to grip with her fingers and toes as she normally would, although she still has sensation.
Additionally, her feet feel a bit sore.
What could be wrong with her?

I suspect that your issue is related to the cervical spine.

Hello! Thank you for reaching out with your friend's concerns regarding her sudden onset of weakness in her limbs. Based on the symptoms you've described, it is important to consider several potential causes for her condition, as well as the appropriate steps to take for evaluation and management.
Firstly, the sudden weakness in both the upper and lower limbs, especially following a physical activity like yoga, could be attributed to several factors. One possibility is muscle fatigue or strain, which can occur after engaging in new or intense physical activities. However, the fact that she is experiencing significant weakness, difficulty in performing daily tasks like braking while riding a motorcycle, and an inability to maintain grip strength raises concerns that warrant further investigation.
Another potential cause could be a neurological issue. Conditions such as peripheral neuropathy, which affects the nerves outside the brain and spinal cord, can lead to weakness and sensory changes. Additionally, conditions like myasthenia gravis, an autoimmune disorder that leads to fluctuating muscle weakness, could also be considered, especially since she is experiencing weakness in both hands and feet.
It is also essential to rule out any serious conditions such as Guillain-Barré syndrome, which is characterized by rapid onset muscle weakness and can follow an infection or vaccination. This condition can lead to significant complications if not addressed promptly.
Given that she has retained sensation but is experiencing weakness, it is crucial for her to seek medical attention as soon as possible. A thorough evaluation by a healthcare professional, preferably a neurologist, is recommended. The doctor may perform a physical examination, assess her muscle strength, and conduct tests such as blood tests, electromyography (EMG), or nerve conduction studies to determine the underlying cause of her symptoms.
In the meantime, it is advisable for her to avoid strenuous activities that could exacerbate her condition. Resting and allowing her body to recover is important, but she should not delay seeking medical advice, especially if her symptoms worsen or if she experiences additional symptoms such as difficulty breathing, swallowing, or severe pain.
In summary, while muscle fatigue from yoga could be a contributing factor, the severity and nature of her symptoms suggest that a more serious underlying condition may be present. Prompt medical evaluation is essential to ensure appropriate diagnosis and treatment. Please encourage your friend to seek medical attention as soon as possible to address her symptoms effectively. Thank you for your concern for her health, and I hope she finds relief soon!
