Hair loss
My hair is oily, so I wash it once a day; otherwise, it will smell bad.
However, every time I wash my hair, I lose about 7 to 8 strands.
Is this a concern? I'm afraid I might become bald.
Please help me with an answer, thank you.

Hello: Losing 7 to 8 hairs each time you wash your hair is completely normal.
A loss of up to 100 hairs is considered acceptable, so please don't worry.

Hair loss can be a distressing issue for many individuals, and understanding its causes and potential treatments is essential for addressing concerns effectively. Based on your question regarding daily hair washing and its relation to hair loss, let's delve into the topic.
First and foremost, it's important to clarify that daily washing of hair, especially for those with oily hair, is generally not a direct cause of hair loss. The human scalp naturally sheds hair as part of its growth cycle, which includes phases of growth, rest, and shedding. On average, it is normal to lose about 50 to 100 hairs per day. Therefore, if you notice a few strands of hair (like the 7 to 8 you mentioned) during your daily washing routine, this is typically within the normal range and not necessarily indicative of impending baldness.
However, there are several factors to consider that could influence hair loss, especially in individuals with oily hair. Frequent washing can help remove excess oil and dirt, which is beneficial for maintaining scalp health. Yet, using harsh shampoos or soaps can potentially irritate the scalp, leading to inflammation and possibly contributing to hair loss over time. It’s advisable to use a gentle, sulfate-free shampoo that is specifically formulated for oily hair to avoid stripping the scalp of its natural oils while still providing adequate cleansing.
Another aspect to consider is the technique used during washing. Vigorous scrubbing or pulling at the hair can lead to mechanical damage, which may exacerbate hair loss. It’s best to be gentle when washing and drying your hair. Patting your hair dry with a towel instead of rubbing it can also help minimize breakage.
In terms of genetics, if you have a family history of hair loss, it’s understandable to be concerned about your own hair health. Genetic factors play a significant role in conditions like androgenetic alopecia (male or female pattern baldness), which is characterized by a gradual thinning of hair. If you notice thinning areas or a receding hairline, it may be worth consulting a dermatologist or a trichologist for a professional evaluation. They can assess your scalp and hair condition, and if necessary, recommend treatments such as topical minoxidil or other therapies that may help stimulate hair growth.
Additionally, lifestyle factors such as stress, diet, and overall health can also impact hair health. Chronic stress can lead to a type of hair loss known as telogen effluvium, where more hairs than usual enter the shedding phase. Ensuring a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals, particularly those known to support hair health (like biotin, zinc, and vitamins A and D), can also be beneficial.
Lastly, if you are concerned about the amount of hair you are losing or if you notice other symptoms such as scalp pain, itching, or visible bald patches, it is crucial to seek medical advice. A healthcare professional can provide a proper diagnosis and tailor a treatment plan suited to your specific needs.
In summary, while daily washing of oily hair is not likely to cause hair loss, it is essential to use appropriate products and techniques to maintain scalp health. If you have concerns about hair loss, especially with a family history, consulting a dermatologist can provide you with the guidance and treatment options you may need. Remember, early intervention can often lead to better outcomes in managing hair loss.
