Headache
Hello Doctor:
1.
During this pregnancy, I occasionally experience headaches, especially after being in the sun.
I start to feel dizzy, and soon after, the headache begins, sometimes to the point of nausea.
Vomiting seems to provide some relief, but I'm not sure why this happens.
2.
Are these medications safe to use: Buscopan, Gascon, and Panadol?
3.
Will cervical cerclage take a long time, and does it help prevent miscarriage or preterm birth?
Thank you.
Sha Sha, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2004/06/12
Dr. Zhan Deqin reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
1: There's no need to get too much sun, especially since the summer sun can be quite harsh.
2: These medications are generally fine, but they shouldn't be taken frequently.
3: Unless you have experienced multiple unexplained miscarriages, there is no need to perform a cervical cerclage for cervical incompetence; after all, surgeries can have side effects.

More Info
Headaches during pregnancy can be a common issue, and understanding their causes, the safety of medications, and the implications of procedures like cervical cerclage is essential for expectant mothers.
1. Causes of Headaches During Pregnancy:
Headaches can occur for various reasons during pregnancy. Hormonal changes, particularly the increase in estrogen, can trigger headaches or migraines. Additionally, factors such as dehydration, fatigue, stress, and changes in sleep patterns can contribute to headache frequency and intensity. In your case, exposure to sunlight may exacerbate your symptoms, leading to dizziness and nausea. It's important to stay hydrated, manage stress, and ensure you get adequate rest. If headaches are severe or accompanied by other symptoms like visual disturbances or swelling, it’s crucial to seek medical attention, as these could indicate more serious conditions like preeclampsia.
2. Safety of Medications:
Regarding the medications you mentioned—Buscopan, Gascon, and Panadol (acetaminophen)—it's important to note that acetaminophen is generally considered safe for use during pregnancy when taken as directed. It is often recommended for managing pain and fever. However, the use of other medications should be approached with caution. Buscopan, which is used for abdominal pain and cramps, and Gascon, typically for gas relief, may not be recommended during pregnancy without a doctor's supervision. Always consult your healthcare provider before taking any medication to ensure it is safe for you and your baby.
3. Cervical Cerclage:
Cervical cerclage is a procedure used to prevent premature birth in women with a history of cervical insufficiency. This condition occurs when the cervix is weak and opens too early during pregnancy. If you have not experienced cervical insufficiency or multiple unexplained miscarriages, the procedure may not be necessary. It is typically performed in the second trimester and can help reduce the risk of miscarriage or preterm birth. However, like any surgical procedure, it carries risks, and the decision to proceed should be made in consultation with your healthcare provider based on your medical history and current pregnancy status.
In summary, if you are experiencing headaches during pregnancy, it is advisable to consult with your healthcare provider to determine the underlying cause and appropriate treatment. Staying hydrated, managing stress, and ensuring adequate rest can help alleviate symptoms. When it comes to medication, acetaminophen is generally safe, but always check with your doctor before taking any new medication. Lastly, cervical cerclage is a procedure that should be considered carefully, based on your individual risk factors and medical history. Always prioritize open communication with your healthcare team to ensure the best outcomes for you and your baby.
