Sore throat
Hello Dr.
Tsai: I would like to ask you about a sudden pain in my left throat that started a couple of days ago.
It feels swollen and painful when I swallow saliva, as if something is stuck.
The sharp pain becomes more pronounced when I yawn, to the point where it makes me feel nauseous.
Additionally, I also have pain in my right ear, and when I use a cotton swab to clean my ear, there is a faint unusual odor.
Could you please tell me what might be going on? Thank you for taking the time to respond.
Do you also see patients at Nantou Hospital?

More Info
Understanding a sore throat involves recognizing its potential causes, symptoms, and treatment options. A sore throat, or pharyngitis, can be caused by various factors, including viral infections, bacterial infections, allergies, irritants, and other underlying health conditions.
Causes of Sore Throat
1. Viral Infections: The most common cause of a sore throat is a viral infection, such as the common cold or influenza. These infections can lead to inflammation of the throat, resulting in pain and discomfort.
2. Bacterial Infections: Streptococcal bacteria, which cause strep throat, are a notable bacterial cause. Strep throat is characterized by severe throat pain, fever, and swollen lymph nodes.
3. Allergies: Allergies to pollen, dust, or pet dander can cause throat irritation and soreness. Allergic reactions can lead to post-nasal drip, where mucus drips down the throat, causing discomfort.
4. Irritants: Exposure to smoke, pollution, or strong odors can irritate the throat, leading to soreness. This is often seen in individuals who smoke or are exposed to secondhand smoke.
5. Other Conditions: Conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) can cause throat pain due to stomach acid irritating the esophagus and throat. Additionally, conditions like tonsillitis or mononucleosis can also lead to a sore throat.
Symptoms
In your case, the symptoms you describe—sharp pain on one side of the throat, a sensation of something being stuck, pain when swallowing, and ear pain—are indicative of a potential infection or inflammation. The ear pain could be referred pain from the throat, as both areas share nerve pathways. The presence of a foul odor when using a cotton swab may suggest an infection or the presence of debris in the ear canal.
Treatment Options
1. Home Remedies: For mild cases, home remedies can be effective. Gargling with warm salt water, staying hydrated, and using throat lozenges can provide relief. Humidifiers can also help keep the throat moist.
2. Over-the-Counter Medications: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help reduce pain and inflammation. Antihistamines may be beneficial if allergies are a contributing factor.
3. Medical Treatment: If a bacterial infection is suspected, such as strep throat, a healthcare provider may prescribe antibiotics. It is essential to complete the entire course of antibiotics to prevent complications.
4. When to Seek Medical Attention: If symptoms persist for more than a few days, worsen, or are accompanied by high fever, difficulty breathing, or difficulty swallowing, it is crucial to seek medical attention. A healthcare provider can perform a physical examination, possibly including a throat swab, to determine the underlying cause and appropriate treatment.
Conclusion
Given your symptoms, it would be advisable to consult a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation. They can provide a definitive diagnosis and recommend the best course of action. If you are inquiring about a specific physician, such as Dr. Tsai, it would be best to contact the hospital directly to confirm their availability for consultations. Remember, timely medical intervention can prevent complications and promote a quicker recovery.
