Cost of premarital health check-up?????

Hello: If I want to undergo a premarital health check-up, how is the fee calculated at the family medicine department? Are there options for simple and comprehensive tests, and what are the contents and costs for each? Is there a discount if both parties attend together? Due to a busy work schedule, can I only go on Saturdays or during weekday evenings for the tests? Thank you for your assistance!

yiyi, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2004/06/28

When considering a pre-marital health check, it’s essential to understand both the costs involved and the specific tests that may be included in the package. Typically, the fees for pre-marital health checks can range from approximately $1,000 to $3,000, depending on the specific tests required and the healthcare facility you choose.
The standard tests included in a pre-marital health check often encompass a variety of assessments to ensure both partners are in good health before marriage. Common components of these checks include:
1. Physical Examination: This may include assessments of vital signs, such as blood pressure, heart sounds, lung sounds, and breast examinations.

2. Blood Tests: These typically cover a range of tests including:
- Complete Blood Count (CBC)
- Blood type (ABO and Rh factor)
- Screening for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) such as syphilis and HIV
- Hepatitis B and C screening
- Rubella immunity (especially important for women)
- Liver function tests
- Kidney function tests
- Lipid profile (cholesterol and triglycerides)
- Blood sugar levels
3. Urinalysis: This can help detect various conditions, including diabetes and kidney disease.

4. Pregnancy Test: For women, a pregnancy test may also be included.

5. Chest X-ray: This may be recommended to check for any underlying lung issues.

Regarding scheduling, it is advisable to call ahead and make an appointment, especially if you have a busy schedule. Many clinics offer flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, to accommodate working individuals. It’s best to confirm with the specific clinic about their available times for pre-marital health checks.

As for discounts, some healthcare facilities may offer special rates for couples who come in together for their pre-marital health checks. It’s worth inquiring about any available promotions or discounts when you contact the clinic.

In terms of preparation for the health check, it is generally recommended to fast for at least 8 hours before any blood tests to ensure accurate results, particularly for glucose and lipid levels. Additionally, bringing your identification and health insurance card (if applicable) is essential.

In summary, a pre-marital health check is a valuable step for couples planning to marry, as it helps identify any potential health issues that could affect their future together. The costs can vary based on the tests included, and it’s beneficial to communicate with the healthcare provider to understand the specifics of what is offered, any potential discounts for couples, and the best times to schedule the appointment.
