Substance abuse leading to deteriorating skin condition?
I heard that applying a cream called "Hydroquinone" can help with skin whitening, so I bought it since it's available at many pharmacies.
At first, it worked well and even faded some scars.
Without realizing it, I used it for about two months, replacing my original skincare products, and I started to notice that my pores became very enlarged.
By the time I wanted to fix it, it was already too late.
I have tried many methods, including glycolic acid, intense pulsed light (IPL), photodynamic therapy, and electrical treatments, and I have completed one session of each, but none have been effective.
I also tried many products that claim to minimize pores, but they still didn't work.
Additionally, I have developed many small, hard bumps on my face.
What should I do? Is there still hope for recovery? Thank you!

In theory, Hirudoid does not have the side effects you mentioned (nor the effects you described).
It is recommended that you visit a dermatologist in person, as further diagnosis cannot be made online.

Misusing skin creams, particularly those containing potent active ingredients, can lead to a range of skin issues, including the deterioration of skin conditions. The case you described highlights several important aspects of skincare and the potential consequences of using products without proper guidance.
Firstly, it’s essential to understand that many over-the-counter creams, especially those marketed for skin whitening or scar reduction, may contain ingredients that can be harsh on the skin if used excessively or improperly. For instance, creams that contain corticosteroids or other potent agents can lead to skin thinning, increased sensitivity, and even a condition known as steroid-induced rosacea. This can manifest as enlarged pores, redness, and a compromised skin barrier, making the skin more susceptible to irritation and breakouts.
In your situation, using a cream like "喜療妥" (which I assume contains potent active ingredients) for an extended period without a break or proper skincare routine may have contributed to the issues you are experiencing. The initial positive effects, such as lightening scars, can often lead to a false sense of security, prompting users to continue applying the product beyond recommended durations. Over time, the skin can become reliant on these products, leading to rebound effects once they are discontinued.
The appearance of enlarged pores and the development of small, hard bumps on the skin could indicate a few things. One possibility is that the skin's natural oil production has been disrupted, leading to clogged pores. When the skin barrier is compromised, it can also lead to an overproduction of sebum as the skin attempts to compensate for the loss of moisture, resulting in a cycle of breakouts and enlarged pores.
To address these issues, it is crucial to take a step back and reassess your skincare routine. Here are some recommendations:
1. Consult a Dermatologist: Given the complexity of your situation, seeking professional advice from a dermatologist is essential. They can provide a tailored treatment plan based on your skin type and concerns.
2. Gentle Cleansing: Use a mild, non-comedogenic cleanser to avoid further irritating your skin. Avoid harsh scrubs or exfoliants that can exacerbate the problem.
3. Moisturization: Incorporate a lightweight, hydrating moisturizer that is suitable for your skin type. Look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, or ceramides, which can help restore the skin barrier without clogging pores.
4. Avoid Potent Actives: Temporarily discontinue the use of any strong actives, such as acids or retinoids, until your skin has stabilized. Once your skin is back to a healthier state, you can gradually reintroduce them under the guidance of a dermatologist.
5. Sun Protection: Always apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen during the day, as some treatments can make your skin more sensitive to UV rays.
6. Patience and Consistency: Skin healing takes time. Be patient with your routine and give your skin the time it needs to recover.
In summary, while it may feel discouraging to deal with the aftermath of misusing skin creams, there is hope for recovery. With the right approach and professional guidance, you can work towards restoring your skin's health and appearance. Remember, skincare is a journey, and sometimes it requires adjustments and a bit of time to see significant changes.
