ointment

My daughter has a red rash on her buttocks, and the pharmacy recommended an ointment called Preform Ointment, which contains Prednisolone and Chinoform.
They also mentioned that it can be applied to small pimples or acne on the face.
Doctor, is it appropriate to use this ointment in that way? What are the effects of this ointment?

kiki, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2001/02/20

Dr. Zheng Lizhen reply Dermatology

PREFORM OINTMENT contains 2.5000 mg of PREDNISOLONE and 27.0000 mg of MGIODOCHLORHYDROXYQUIN per gram.
It is indicated for eczema or dermatitis and should be used under the guidance of a physician.
This medication is not suitable for treating acne or pimples.
If your daughter's red bottom is caused by a fungal infection, this medication is also not appropriate.
It is recommended that you consult a dermatologist for an accurate diagnosis and treatment.

More Info

Preform Ointment, which contains Prednisolone and Chinoform, is primarily indicated for inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema and dermatitis. Prednisolone is a corticosteroid that helps reduce inflammation, redness, and itching, while Chinoform has antiseptic properties that can help prevent infection. However, it is crucial to use this ointment under the guidance of a healthcare professional, especially when it comes to treating children.

Using Preform Ointment for conditions like diaper rash (often referred to as "red butt") can be appropriate if the rash is due to inflammation. However, if the rash is caused by a fungal infection (such as yeast), this ointment may not be suitable, as corticosteroids can exacerbate fungal infections. Therefore, it is essential to have a proper diagnosis from a pediatrician or dermatologist before applying this ointment to your child's skin.

Regarding the suggestion to use Preform Ointment for acne or pimples on the face, this is not advisable. Corticosteroids can lead to skin thinning and other side effects, especially when used on the delicate facial skin. Additionally, using a steroid ointment on acne can worsen the condition by promoting bacterial growth and potentially leading to more breakouts. Instead, there are specific treatments for acne that are safer and more effective for children and adolescents.

When considering the use of any topical medication on children, it is vital to monitor for any adverse reactions. If your daughter experiences any worsening of her skin condition or new symptoms after using the ointment, you should discontinue use and consult a healthcare professional immediately.

In summary, while Preform Ointment can be beneficial for certain inflammatory skin conditions, it is not suitable for all types of rashes or skin issues, especially acne. Always consult with a healthcare provider for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan tailored to your child's specific needs. Regular follow-ups and open communication with your healthcare provider can help ensure the best outcomes for your child's skin health.
