Avoid excessive sun exposure!

Hello Dr.
Jiang,
I have a few skin-related questions I would like to ask:
1.
Why do I experience localized stinging sensations on my body, primarily on my upper body and face, whenever the sun is particularly strong?
2.
A few days ago, while helping to move some furniture during a painting project at home, I sweated a lot.
I’m not sure if it was due to the paint or dust, but my neck and the bends of my arms became extremely itchy.
Initially, it was just red, but later some rashes developed.
It is slowly healing now, but the affected areas appear to have a thick, dark layer of skin.
This has happened before on my neck, leaving a dark scar that looks like it hasn’t been cleaned properly.
Is there a way to treat the scar? Also, what are the causes of rashes and what preventive measures can be taken? Thank you! (I apologize for the lengthy questions.)

Dr. Jiang Zheen reply Dermatology

1.
There are two possibilities for this situation: the first is an allergic reaction of the skin to sunlight.
The second is dermatitis caused by the increase in temperature due to sunlight.

2.
The second situation is contact dermatitis, and your scar should heal without the need for medication.
To prevent this, it is important to avoid creating such an environment.
Wishing you well.

Hello! Thank you for reaching out with your questions regarding skin reactions, particularly in relation to sun sensitivity and rashes. Let's break down your concerns and provide some insights based on medical knowledge.

1. Sun Sensitivity and Localized Pain: The localized pain or discomfort you experience when exposed to sunlight could be indicative of a condition known as photosensitivity. This occurs when the skin reacts adversely to sunlight, leading to symptoms such as pain, redness, or even rashes. There are several potential causes for this sensitivity, including:
- Photodermatitis: This is an inflammatory skin reaction triggered by sunlight, which can occur in individuals with certain skin types or pre-existing skin conditions.

- Allergic Reactions: Sometimes, ingredients in skincare products or medications can cause an allergic reaction when exposed to sunlight, leading to localized pain or rashes.

- Underlying Skin Conditions: Conditions like lupus or certain types of eczema can also cause increased sensitivity to sunlight.

To manage this sensitivity, it is crucial to protect your skin from sun exposure. This includes wearing protective clothing, using broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF, and seeking shade whenever possible.

2. Itching and Rash After Moving Furniture: The intense itching and subsequent rash you experienced after moving furniture and sweating could be due to several factors:
- Contact Dermatitis: This occurs when the skin reacts to irritants or allergens, such as dust, paint, or other chemicals. If you were exposed to paint or dust while moving furniture, it could have triggered an allergic reaction.

- Heat Rash: Sweating can lead to blocked sweat glands, resulting in a heat rash, which is characterized by red, itchy bumps.

- Fungal Infections: Areas that are warm and moist, such as the bends of your arms and neck, can be prone to fungal infections, which can cause itching and rashes.

For the treatment of the rash, it is advisable to keep the affected area clean and dry. Over-the-counter antihistamines can help alleviate itching, while topical corticosteroids may reduce inflammation. If the rash persists or worsens, consulting a dermatologist is recommended.

3. Darkened Skin and Scarring: The darkened, rough skin you described could be a result of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, which often occurs after skin irritation or injury. This condition is common and can be treated with:
- Topical Treatments: Products containing ingredients like hydroquinone, retinoids, or vitamin C can help lighten hyperpigmented areas over time.

- Chemical Peels or Laser Treatments: These procedures can also be effective in reducing pigmentation and improving skin texture, but they should be performed by a qualified dermatologist.

4. Preventive Measures: To prevent future occurrences of rashes or skin reactions, consider the following:
- Patch Testing: Before using new products, perform a patch test to check for allergic reactions.

- Sun Protection: Always apply sunscreen before sun exposure, even on cloudy days, and reapply every two hours.

- Skin Care Routine: Maintain a gentle skincare routine that avoids harsh chemicals and irritants.

In conclusion, while your symptoms may be manageable with proper care and preventive measures, it is essential to consult with a dermatologist for a thorough evaluation and tailored treatment plan. They can provide specific recommendations based on your skin type and the nature of your reactions. Thank you for your questions, and I hope this information helps you understand your skin better!
