Thank you!

Dr. Wu Yuxin reply Otolaryngology

Allergic rhinitis is primarily characterized by symptoms such as sneezing, nasal congestion, and runny nose.
In Taiwan, about 80% of allergens are dust mites, while the remaining allergens include cold air, pet dander, saliva particles, cockroaches, and to a lesser extent, milk and pork.
Therefore, allergens can vary from person to person, and it is essential to rely on personal observation to completely avoid allergens in order to effectively manage allergic rhinitis.
As long as the substances are not one's specific allergens, they can be consumed without worsening the condition.

More Info

Allergic rhinitis, commonly known as hay fever, is an allergic reaction that occurs when your immune system overreacts to allergens in the air, such as pollen, dust mites, mold, and pet dander. Symptoms can include sneezing, runny or stuffy nose, itchy eyes, and postnasal drip. While the primary triggers for allergic rhinitis are environmental allergens, certain foods can exacerbate symptoms in some individuals. Here’s a guide on foods to avoid and additional considerations for managing allergic rhinitis.

Foods to Avoid
1. Histamine-Rich Foods: Foods that are high in histamine can trigger or worsen allergic reactions. These include:
- Aged cheeses (like cheddar and blue cheese)
- Processed meats (like salami and pepperoni)
- Fermented foods (like sauerkraut, kimchi, and soy sauce)
- Alcoholic beverages, particularly red wine and beer
2. Food Additives: Certain preservatives and additives can provoke allergic reactions. Common culprits include:
- Monosodium glutamate (MSG)
- Artificial colorings and flavorings
- Sulfites, often found in dried fruits and some wines
3. Common Allergens: If you have known food allergies, it’s crucial to avoid these foods as they can trigger an allergic response:
- Dairy products (for those who are lactose intolerant or allergic)
- Nuts (especially peanuts and tree nuts)
- Shellfish and fish
- Wheat and gluten-containing products
4. Cross-Reactive Foods: Some individuals with pollen allergies may experience cross-reactivity with certain foods. For example:
- People allergic to ragweed may react to bananas, melons, and cucumbers.

- Those allergic to birch pollen might have reactions to apples, carrots, and hazelnuts.

Additional Considerations
- Hydration: Staying well-hydrated can help thin mucus and alleviate nasal congestion. Drinking plenty of water, herbal teas, and broths can be beneficial.

- Anti-Inflammatory Foods: Incorporating anti-inflammatory foods into your diet may help manage symptoms. Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids (like salmon, flaxseeds, and walnuts), fruits, and vegetables can support overall immune function.

- Probiotics: Some studies suggest that probiotics may help reduce the severity of allergic rhinitis symptoms. Foods like yogurt, kefir, and fermented vegetables can be good sources.

- Consultation with a Healthcare Provider: If you suspect that certain foods are exacerbating your allergic rhinitis, it’s advisable to keep a food diary and consult with an allergist or healthcare provider. They can perform tests to identify specific food allergies and provide personalized dietary recommendations.

- Environmental Control: In addition to dietary changes, managing your environment is crucial. This includes using air purifiers, keeping windows closed during high pollen seasons, and regularly cleaning to reduce dust and mold.

Conclusion
While allergic rhinitis is primarily triggered by environmental allergens, certain foods can exacerbate symptoms in sensitive individuals. Avoiding histamine-rich foods, food additives, and known allergens can help manage your condition. Always consult with a healthcare professional for tailored advice and to explore potential food allergies. By combining dietary management with environmental controls, you can significantly improve your quality of life and reduce the frequency and severity of allergic rhinitis symptoms.
