Thyroid gland
Hello Dr.
Hsieh~~^^ I had thyroid surgery in mid-July and subsequently caught a cold.
After a few days without significant improvement, I sought medical attention, which provided some relief.
Following the surgery, the doctors advised me to consume cold foods to reduce swelling due to the intubation during the procedure, so I did.
However, shortly after, I caught a cold and now I cannot drink cold beverages.
I would like to ask how long it will take for my throat to heal or for the swelling to subside.
Is there any method to improve my condition? I still feel discomfort when swallowing, and I'm concerned whether my voice will become hoarse due to the surgery.
Additionally, since I cannot drink hot beverages, I'm worried that my cold will linger, so I am only drinking water.
It has already been a week, so I am wondering if there are any ways to shorten the duration of my cold.
Thank you for your response! Please make sure to rest well, doctor~~^^

Dr. Xie Wenhuai reply Surgery
In mid-July, I just underwent thyroid surgery, which was necessarily performed under general anesthesia.
General anesthesia is mostly administered through endotracheal intubation.
Postoperatively, patients often feel discomfort in the throat, and may even experience hoarseness.
Since it has only been a few days since the surgery, there is no need to be overly concerned.
If there is no improvement, you can visit an otolaryngologist for a laryngoscopy.
Treatment may include corticosteroids (prednisolone 5 mg, twice daily) for one week to reduce inflammation and swelling.
Try to relax.
Thank you for your letter.

Post-thyroid surgery recovery can be a challenging process, especially when compounded by symptoms of a cold. It’s important to understand that after thyroid surgery, patients may experience a variety of symptoms due to the surgical procedure itself, as well as the body’s response to the surgery.
Firstly, it’s common for patients to experience throat discomfort, hoarseness, or a feeling of tightness in the throat after thyroid surgery. This is often due to the intubation that occurs during general anesthesia, which can irritate the throat. The discomfort can last for several days to weeks, but it typically improves as the tissues heal. If you are experiencing persistent discomfort or if your voice remains hoarse beyond a few weeks, it would be advisable to consult an ENT specialist for further evaluation.
Regarding your cold symptoms, it’s not uncommon for patients to catch a cold after surgery, especially if their immune system is temporarily weakened due to the stress of the surgery. The symptoms of a cold, such as a runny nose, cough, and sore throat, can indeed linger, particularly if you are not able to drink warm fluids or consume soothing foods. While cold symptoms generally resolve within a week or two, there are several strategies you can employ to help alleviate your symptoms and support your recovery:
1. Hydration: Continue to drink plenty of fluids. While you mentioned that you cannot drink hot beverages, consider warm (not hot) broths or herbal teas that can be soothing to your throat. Staying hydrated helps thin mucus and can ease throat discomfort.
2. Humidifier: Using a humidifier in your room can help keep the air moist, which can soothe a sore throat and help with congestion.
3. Rest: Ensure you are getting adequate rest. Your body needs time to heal from both the surgery and the cold.
4. Throat Lozenges: Over-the-counter throat lozenges can provide temporary relief for throat discomfort. Look for those that contain soothing ingredients like honey or menthol.
5. Avoid Irritants: Stay away from smoke, strong odors, and other irritants that can exacerbate throat discomfort.
6. Warm Salt Water Gargle: Gargling with warm salt water can help reduce throat inflammation and discomfort. This can be done several times a day.
7. Nutritional Support: Eating a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals can help support your immune system. Soft foods that are easy to swallow may be beneficial if you are experiencing throat discomfort.
8. Medication: If your symptoms are severe, consider discussing with your healthcare provider the use of over-the-counter medications that can alleviate cold symptoms, such as decongestants or antihistamines.
As for the swelling in your throat, it may take a few weeks for the swelling to subside completely. If you notice that the swelling is not improving or if it worsens, it is essential to follow up with your surgeon or primary care physician. They may want to examine your throat to ensure there are no complications from the surgery.
In summary, while it is common to experience discomfort and cold symptoms after thyroid surgery, there are several strategies you can implement to manage your recovery effectively. Always keep an open line of communication with your healthcare providers regarding your symptoms, and do not hesitate to seek medical advice if you have concerns about your recovery process.
