Can teeth undergoing orthodontic treatment receive root canal therapy?
I am currently undergoing orthodontic treatment, and later on, I developed a pus-filled bump on the gum of my upper right third molar.
The doctor said it is gingivitis and that I need to undergo root canal treatment.
Will this affect my teeth that are currently being straightened? I am getting orthodontic treatment because one of my front teeth is recessed, and I feel that after the treatment, my front gums are more prominent when I smile than before.
Is this a normal phenomenon?

1.
If root canal treatment is necessary, it should be performed during orthodontic treatment as well.
2.
Since we are unaware of the pre-treatment condition, we cannot assess the post-treatment situation.

Root canal treatment (RCT) can indeed have implications for teeth undergoing orthodontic treatment. When a tooth requires RCT, it typically indicates that the pulp of the tooth is infected or damaged, which can lead to pain and other complications if not addressed. In your case, the presence of a gum abscess suggests that there is an ongoing infection that needs to be treated promptly to prevent further complications.
When a tooth is undergoing orthodontic treatment, the forces applied to the teeth can affect their stability and health. If a tooth that has undergone RCT is subjected to orthodontic forces, it may be more susceptible to movement than a healthy tooth with an intact pulp. This is because the tooth's vitality is compromised, and the surrounding bone may not respond as robustly to the forces applied during orthodontic treatment. However, many orthodontists are experienced in managing teeth that have had RCT, and they can adjust their treatment plans accordingly.
Regarding your concern about the visibility of your gums after orthodontic treatment, it is not uncommon for patients to notice changes in their gum appearance as their teeth shift. The movement of teeth can lead to changes in the position of the gums, which may make them appear more prominent or receded in certain areas. This can be particularly noticeable if there has been significant movement of the anterior teeth, as in your case with the front tooth being pushed back.
It is essential to maintain good oral hygiene during orthodontic treatment, especially when there are underlying issues like gum disease or infections. Poor oral hygiene can exacerbate gum problems and lead to further complications, including the potential for tooth loss. Regular dental check-ups and cleanings are crucial during this time.
If you are concerned about the impact of RCT on your orthodontic treatment, it would be wise to discuss this with both your orthodontist and the dentist performing the root canal. They can provide you with a comprehensive treatment plan that considers both the orthodontic and endodontic aspects of your care.
In summary, while root canal treatment can affect the stability of teeth undergoing orthodontics, with proper management and communication between your dental care providers, you can achieve a successful outcome. If you have any lingering concerns about the appearance of your gums or the health of your teeth during this process, do not hesitate to bring them up with your dental team. They are there to help you navigate these challenges and ensure that your treatment is as effective and comfortable as possible.
