I have dentures, but I want to undergo orthodontic treatment?

Hello Dr.
Chen,
I would like to undergo orthodontic treatment.
I don't have severe protrusion, and my teeth are not extremely misaligned.
However, when I bite down, my lower teeth are obstructed by my upper teeth.
The issue is that I have dentures (I’ve heard that it can be difficult to correct alignment for those with dentures, and there’s even a risk of treatment failure), which makes me a bit apprehensive.
The dentures are located on my front teeth and one next to it, with three on the upper right (a total of five).
I have a couple of questions:
1.
What is the approximate cost of orthodontic treatment? I understand that you typically need to see the patient first to provide an accurate estimate, but could you give me a rough idea?
2.
How will the dentures be managed? After the orthodontic treatment, will I need to have new dentures made?
Thank you.

When considering orthodontic treatment with existing dentures, it's essential to understand the implications, costs, and potential outcomes. Your situation, where you have dentures in the anterior region and are contemplating braces, raises several important points.

Understanding Orthodontic Treatment with Dentures
1. Orthodontic Feasibility: While it is possible to get braces with dentures, the presence of dentures can complicate the treatment. Dentures are typically used to replace missing teeth, and if they are not securely anchored (as in the case of removable dentures), they may shift during orthodontic treatment. This can lead to complications in achieving the desired tooth alignment.

2. Consultation with an Orthodontist: Before proceeding, it's crucial to have a thorough consultation with an orthodontist who can evaluate your dental structure, including the condition of your existing dentures. They will assess how your current denture setup interacts with your natural teeth and how it might affect the orthodontic process.

Costs of Orthodontic Treatment
1. Estimated Costs: The cost of braces can vary significantly based on several factors, including the complexity of your case, the type of braces (metal, ceramic, lingual, or clear aligners), and the duration of treatment. In the United States, traditional metal braces typically range from $3,000 to $7,000. However, since you have dentures, the orthodontist may need to make adjustments or provide additional treatments, which could increase the overall cost.

2. Insurance and Payment Plans: Many dental insurance plans cover a portion of orthodontic treatment, but coverage can vary widely. It's advisable to check with your insurance provider to understand what is covered. Additionally, many orthodontic offices offer payment plans that can help manage the cost over time.

Handling Existing Dentures
1. Denture Adjustment: Depending on the orthodontic treatment plan, your orthodontist may recommend adjustments to your dentures. This could involve modifying the dentures to accommodate the braces or, in some cases, replacing them after the orthodontic treatment is completed.

2. Post-Orthodontic Considerations: After your braces are removed, you may need to have new dentures made, especially if the alignment of your natural teeth has changed significantly. This is crucial for ensuring that your bite is correct and that your dentures fit well.

Conclusion
In summary, while it is possible to get braces with existing dentures, it requires careful planning and consultation with dental professionals. The costs can vary widely based on your specific situation, and adjustments to your dentures may be necessary throughout the treatment process. It's essential to communicate openly with your orthodontist about your concerns and expectations, as they can provide tailored advice and a treatment plan that considers both your orthodontic needs and the condition of your dentures.
Ultimately, the goal is to achieve a functional and aesthetically pleasing smile while ensuring that your dental health is maintained throughout the process.
