Abortion
Currently, aside from RU486, are there any other medications approved by the Department of Health for medical abortion? If a physician diagnoses that it can be used, what would the cost be?

(1) RU486 has been approved by the Department of Health, but hospitals have not yet officially stocked the medication.
There is a time gap between the Department's approval and the importation by pharmaceutical companies, which affects when hospitals can sell it.
Therefore, I am not clear on the pricing of the medication.
(2) Aside from RU486, there are no other oral medications for abortion.

More Info
In Taiwan, the primary medication approved for medical abortion is RU486 (Mifepristone), which is often used in conjunction with another medication called Misoprostol. RU486 works by blocking the hormone progesterone, which is necessary for the pregnancy to continue. After taking RU486, Misoprostol is administered to induce contractions and expel the pregnancy tissue. This combination is effective for terminating early pregnancies, typically up to 10 weeks gestation.
As of now, there are no other oral medications approved by the Taiwanese health authorities specifically for medical abortion beyond RU486 and Misoprostol. However, there are other methods of abortion available, including surgical options such as aspiration or dilation and curettage (D&C), which may be recommended depending on the gestational age and individual circumstances.
The cost of medical abortion using RU486 and Misoprostol can vary depending on the healthcare provider and the specific services included. Generally, the total cost for the medication and associated medical care can range from approximately NT$5,000 to NT$10,000 (around USD 160 to USD 320). This price may include consultations, ultrasounds, and follow-up visits, but it is advisable to confirm the exact costs with the healthcare provider beforehand.
If a patient is considering an abortion, it is crucial to consult with a qualified healthcare professional who can provide personalized advice based on the individual's health status, gestational age, and preferences. The healthcare provider can also discuss the potential risks and benefits of each method, as well as any emotional or psychological support that may be needed during the process.
It is important to note that while medical abortion is generally safe, there can be side effects such as heavy bleeding, cramping, and nausea. Patients should be informed about what to expect and when to seek medical attention if complications arise. Additionally, emotional support and counseling may be beneficial, as the decision to terminate a pregnancy can be complex and may involve various feelings and concerns.
In summary, RU486 remains the primary medication for medical abortion in Taiwan, with Misoprostol used as a follow-up treatment. Other surgical options are available, and costs can vary. It is essential to seek professional medical advice to ensure a safe and informed decision regarding abortion options.
