Does Wearing Plano Glasses Affect Vision in Non-Myopic Individuals? - Ophthalmology

Plano glasses

Hello Dr.
Lin, thank you for taking the time to respond to my question.
I would like to ask another question: If a person without myopia wears plano glasses for an extended period, will their vision deteriorate? As I mentioned in my previous message, I have noticed some optical aberrations when using plano glasses to view distant objects.
I am wondering if these aberrations could cause someone without myopia to gradually adapt to them, potentially leading to a decline in their vision over time.
Thank you!

Dr. Lin Zhengyi reply Ophthalmology

Theoretically, wearing plano glasses should not affect vision in the same way as not wearing glasses, and prolonged use should not worsen vision unless the lenses are dirty or scratched.
For individuals without refractive errors, wearing plano glasses is not recommended.
The phenomenon of "aberration" is more likely caused by dirty, scratched, or tinted lenses, which can lead to unclear vision.

Wearing plano glasses, or non-prescription glasses, does not inherently affect the vision of individuals who are not myopic (nearsighted). Plano glasses are designed to have no corrective power, meaning they do not alter the refractive state of the eye. However, there are several factors to consider regarding the use of plano glasses and their potential effects on vision.

1. Visual Acclimatization: When individuals wear plano glasses, they may experience a slight change in their visual perception due to the lens material and design. If the lenses are of poor optical quality or if they distort light in any way, this could lead to visual discomfort or strain. Over time, if a person becomes accustomed to wearing these glasses, they might perceive their vision differently, but this does not equate to a deterioration of visual acuity. Instead, it may be a matter of adaptation to the optical characteristics of the lenses.

2. Eye Strain and Fatigue: If plano glasses are worn for extended periods, especially in situations where the individual is focusing on screens or reading, it could lead to eye strain. This is particularly true if the glasses are not designed to filter out blue light or reduce glare, which can contribute to visual fatigue. Symptoms of eye strain can include headaches, blurred vision, and discomfort, but these symptoms are not indicative of a permanent change in vision.

3. Visual Differences and Perception: You mentioned experiencing "景差" (image disparity) when using plano glasses. This could be due to the optical quality of the lenses or the way light is refracted through them. If the lenses are not of high quality, they may introduce aberrations that can affect how you perceive your surroundings. While this might lead to temporary discomfort or a feeling of visual distortion, it does not cause a decline in the actual refractive state of your eyes.

4. Long-term Effects: There is no scientific evidence to suggest that wearing plano glasses will lead to a deterioration in vision for individuals who do not have refractive errors. However, if you find that wearing these glasses consistently leads to discomfort or visual disturbances, it may be worth consulting with an eye care professional. They can assess your visual needs and determine if a different type of eyewear, such as blue light filtering glasses or anti-reflective lenses, might be more beneficial.

5. Preventive Measures: If you are concerned about your eye health, consider taking regular breaks from screens (the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds), ensuring proper lighting while reading or working, and maintaining a balanced diet rich in nutrients that support eye health, such as vitamins A, C, and E, as well as omega-3 fatty acids.

In conclusion, wearing plano glasses does not cause vision to deteriorate in non-myopic individuals. However, it is essential to ensure that the glasses are of good optical quality and to be mindful of eye strain. If you have ongoing concerns about your vision or experience discomfort, it is advisable to seek a professional evaluation from an eye care specialist.
