Chronic pain
Hello Doctor, I have been experiencing a persistent sensation of phlegm in my nasal cavity, which makes my breathing slightly uncomfortable, likely due to the phlegm.
There is also some phlegm near the roof of my mouth, which when expelled is not very thick and is white in color.
This area feels somewhat dry, and I find it difficult to swallow saliva.
Additionally, it feels very dry, and when the air quality is poor, my breathing becomes quite challenging, requiring me to breathe through my mouth.
My grandfather has a history of nasopharyngeal carcinoma.
Thank you.

Dr. Jian Huangqi reply Otolaryngology
Mucus in the nasal cavity and maxilla may be indicative of chronic rhinitis or sinusitis, and it could also be a sign of nasopharyngeal carcinoma.
You should consult an otolaryngologist nearby.
Thank you.

More Info
Chronic nasal discomfort can be a frustrating and debilitating condition that affects your quality of life. Based on your description, it seems you are experiencing a combination of nasal congestion, post-nasal drip, and dryness in your throat and nasal passages. These symptoms can be attributed to several underlying causes, including chronic rhinitis, sinusitis, or even structural issues in the nasal cavity.
Understanding Your Symptoms
1. Nasal Congestion and Post-Nasal Drip: The sensation of having phlegm in your nasal passages and throat can often be due to post-nasal drip, where mucus accumulates and drips down the back of the throat. This can lead to discomfort and difficulty swallowing, as you have described. The mucus may be thin and clear, which is typical of allergic rhinitis or viral infections.
2. Dryness: The feeling of dryness in your throat and nasal passages can be exacerbated by environmental factors such as low humidity, air pollution, or allergens. Dry air can irritate the mucous membranes, leading to inflammation and discomfort.
3. Breathing Difficulties: When the nasal passages are congested, it can force you to breathe through your mouth, which is less efficient and can lead to further dryness and discomfort in the throat.
4. Family History of Nasopharyngeal Cancer: Given your family history, it is understandable to be concerned about any persistent symptoms in the nasal and throat area. While the presence of nasal discomfort does not directly indicate cancer, it is essential to monitor your symptoms closely and consult with a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation.
Potential Causes
1. Allergic Rhinitis: This is a common condition caused by allergens such as pollen, dust mites, or pet dander. It can lead to symptoms like nasal congestion, sneezing, and post-nasal drip.
2. Chronic Sinusitis: This condition occurs when the sinuses become inflamed and swollen, leading to mucus buildup and nasal congestion. Symptoms may include facial pain, pressure, and a reduced sense of smell.
3. Structural Issues: Conditions such as a deviated septum or nasal polyps can obstruct airflow and contribute to chronic nasal discomfort.
4. Environmental Factors: Exposure to irritants such as smoke, strong odors, or pollutants can exacerbate symptoms and lead to chronic discomfort.
Solutions and Recommendations
1. Consult an ENT Specialist: Given your symptoms and family history, it is advisable to see an Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) specialist. They can perform a thorough examination, including nasal endoscopy or imaging studies, to identify any underlying issues.
2. Nasal Irrigation: Using a saline nasal spray or performing nasal irrigation with a neti pot can help clear mucus and allergens from the nasal passages, providing relief from congestion and dryness.
3. Humidification: Using a humidifier in your home can help maintain moisture in the air, reducing dryness in your nasal passages and throat.
4. Allergy Management: If allergies are identified as a contributing factor, your doctor may recommend antihistamines or nasal corticosteroids to help manage symptoms.
5. Hydration: Staying well-hydrated can help thin mucus, making it easier to clear from your throat and nasal passages.
6. Avoid Irritants: Try to minimize exposure to known irritants, such as tobacco smoke, strong perfumes, and environmental pollutants.
7. Monitoring Symptoms: Keep a diary of your symptoms, noting any triggers or patterns. This information can be valuable for your healthcare provider in determining the best course of action.
In conclusion, chronic nasal discomfort can stem from various causes, and understanding the underlying issues is crucial for effective management. Consulting with a healthcare professional, particularly an ENT specialist, will provide you with the necessary guidance and treatment options tailored to your specific situation. Remember, early intervention is key, especially considering your family history, so do not hesitate to seek help.
