Persistent Itchy Left Eye: Is It Just Allergies? - Ophthalmology

Itchy eyes?

Hello.
My left eye often feels very itchy and uncomfortable, as if there are small particles inside.
I wear contact lenses, and although I have seen a doctor, they said it is an allergy.
Each time, I am prescribed two types of eye drops, one of which is for inflammation.
After starting the medication for about one to two weeks, my eye gradually improves, but often within a month, the same symptoms return, and it is always the left eye.
Doctor, is this simply an allergy? What should I do?

Ann, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2004/09/06

Dr. Chen Xuan reply Ophthalmology

Hello: Itchy eyes or a foreign body sensation are associated with various surface eye diseases, such as allergic conjunctivitis, dry eye syndrome, eye stones, ingrown eyelashes, and superior limbic keratoconjunctivitis (which commonly occurs in contact lens wearers).
The development may not be symmetrical between the left and right eyes.
Additionally, an incorrect curvature of contact lenses (either too tight or too loose) can also lead to these symptoms.
Please wear your contact lenses for a detailed examination at the ophthalmology clinic.
Sincerely, Dr.
Chen Hsuan, Ophthalmologist.

Persistent itching and discomfort in one eye, particularly when it occurs repeatedly, can be quite bothersome and may indeed be indicative of an underlying issue. Based on your description, it sounds like you are experiencing symptoms that could be attributed to allergies, but there are several factors to consider.

Firstly, allergic conjunctivitis is a common cause of itchy eyes. This condition occurs when the eyes react to allergens such as pollen, pet dander, dust mites, or mold. The symptoms typically include itching, redness, and tearing. If your symptoms improve with the use of anti-inflammatory eye drops, it supports the idea that allergies may be at play. However, the fact that your symptoms return after a short period suggests that there may be ongoing exposure to allergens or irritants.

Another possibility is that you may be experiencing contact lens-related issues. Wearing contact lenses can sometimes lead to discomfort, especially if they are not cleaned properly or if they are worn for extended periods. Additionally, some individuals develop sensitivity to the materials used in contact lenses or the solutions used to clean them. If you are wearing contact lenses, it might be worth considering a break from them to see if your symptoms improve. Switching to daily disposable lenses or trying a different brand may also help.

Furthermore, it is essential to rule out other causes of eye discomfort. Conditions such as dry eye syndrome, blepharitis (inflammation of the eyelids), or even a foreign body sensation can cause similar symptoms. Dry eyes can be exacerbated by environmental factors, prolonged screen time, or insufficient tear production. If you have not already done so, it may be beneficial to consult with an eye care professional who can perform a comprehensive examination to assess your tear production and the overall health of your eyes.

If your symptoms persist despite treatment, it may be necessary to explore other options. This could include allergy testing to identify specific triggers or considering prescription medications that may provide more effective relief. In some cases, a referral to an allergist may be warranted for further evaluation and management.

In summary, while your symptoms may initially appear to be due to allergies, it is crucial to consider other potential causes, especially given the recurrent nature of your discomfort. A thorough examination by an eye care professional will help determine the exact cause of your symptoms and guide appropriate treatment. In the meantime, practicing good hygiene with your contact lenses, avoiding known allergens, and using preservative-free artificial tears may provide some relief. If you continue to experience symptoms, don't hesitate to seek further medical advice.
