Having a cold and diarrhea at the same time?

Hello Doctor: I have been experiencing bowel movements more than three times a day for nearly a month.
During this time, I have had soft, hard, and loose stools.
Last week, I caught a cold, and since then, I have been experiencing diarrhea every day.
Recently, I have also been experiencing frequent belching.
I am around 20 years old and previously underwent an upper endoscopy and colonoscopy, which revealed a "polyp" in my stomach.
After biopsy (it seems like a sample was taken during the endoscopy), it was determined to be a benign "polyp." Given my recent frequent diarrhea, I am starting to wonder if there is some underlying condition.
Should I return to the hospital for further examination? Please advise, thank you!

You have been experiencing frequent diarrhea and flatulence, which may indicate gastroenteritis.
It is advisable to consult a gastroenterologist for treatment.
As for the benign polyps in your stomach, they are unlikely to worsen; however, if you continue to experience discomfort in your stomach, it is best to see a gastroenterologist for a thorough examination.

It sounds like you have been experiencing a range of gastrointestinal symptoms that have been quite distressing. Based on your description, you are dealing with frequent diarrhea, varying stool consistency, and some additional symptoms such as belching and possibly some discomfort after experiencing a cold. Given your medical history, including the benign polyp found during your previous endoscopic examinations, it is understandable that you are concerned about your current symptoms.

Firstly, let’s address the frequent diarrhea. Diarrhea can be caused by a variety of factors, including infections (viral, bacterial, or parasitic), food intolerances, stress, and underlying gastrointestinal disorders such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) or Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). Since you mentioned experiencing cold symptoms prior to the onset of your diarrhea, it is possible that you may have had a viral gastroenteritis, which is a common cause of acute diarrhea and can sometimes be accompanied by other symptoms such as nausea and abdominal cramps.

The presence of soft, hard, and watery stools suggests that your bowel movements are not consistent, which can be indicative of a functional gastrointestinal disorder like IBS. IBS is characterized by a combination of symptoms, including abdominal pain, bloating, and changes in bowel habits (diarrhea, constipation, or alternating between both). Stress and dietary factors can significantly influence IBS symptoms, and it is important to consider these aspects in your lifestyle.

Regarding the belching and gas, these symptoms can also be associated with gastrointestinal issues. They may arise from swallowing air (aerophagia), eating too quickly, or consuming certain foods that are known to produce gas (such as beans, carbonated drinks, and certain vegetables). It is also possible that the changes in your bowel habits are contributing to increased gas production.

Given your history of a benign gastric polyp, it is wise to remain vigilant about any new or worsening symptoms. While the polyp was found to be benign, any significant changes in your gastrointestinal health should be evaluated. If your diarrhea persists, especially if accompanied by other concerning symptoms such as weight loss, blood in the stool, or severe abdominal pain, it would be prudent to return to your healthcare provider for further evaluation. This may include repeat endoscopic examinations or imaging studies to rule out any new developments.

In the meantime, consider keeping a food diary to identify any potential dietary triggers that may be exacerbating your symptoms. Additionally, maintaining hydration is crucial, especially with frequent diarrhea, as it can lead to dehydration. You may also want to explore dietary adjustments, such as a low-FODMAP diet, which has been shown to help some individuals with IBS.

Lastly, managing stress through relaxation techniques, exercise, or counseling may also be beneficial, as stress can significantly impact gastrointestinal function.

In summary, while your symptoms may be related to a functional gastrointestinal disorder, it is essential to monitor your condition closely and seek medical advice if your symptoms do not improve or worsen. Your health is important, and addressing these concerns with a healthcare professional will help ensure that you receive the appropriate care and management.
