Is there a treatment for depression called EMPR?

Is there a treatment for depression called EMPR? If so, could you please let me know which hospitals in Taipei offer this type of treatment? My child has depression and has heard about this therapy; he wants to try it to see if it can help him get back on track.
Thank you for your assistance!

Dr. Li Ruqing reply Psychiatry

I’m sorry, but I have not heard of the EMPR treatment method.
Currently, the treatment for depression in children and adolescents involves various approaches, but a combination of biological, psychological, and social analyses and interventions remains the most accepted treatment model.
The treatment for depression consists of three phases: the acute phase, the recovery phase, and the follow-up phase, along with three essential qualities: perseverance, patience, and confidence.
Discussing the treatment process and methods with a qualified child psychiatrist would be the most beneficial for your child.
You can inquire at major hospitals near your home to see if there are child psychiatry specialists available, and seek treatment as soon as possible.
Continuing treatment is believed to be the most helpful for your child.
I hope your child recovers their former vitality soon, and I also wish you peace of mind.

EMPR, or Enhanced Mindfulness-Based Psychotherapy, is not a widely recognized or established treatment specifically for depression in the medical community. While mindfulness-based therapies have gained traction in recent years, particularly in the context of mental health, the term "EMPR" does not appear to be a standard designation for any specific therapeutic approach. Instead, depression is typically treated through a combination of psychotherapy, medication, and lifestyle changes, tailored to the individual's needs.

In the context of treating depression, several evidence-based approaches are commonly utilized:
1. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): This is one of the most effective forms of psychotherapy for depression. It focuses on identifying and changing negative thought patterns and behaviors that contribute to the individual's depressive symptoms.

2. Medication: Antidepressants, such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), are often prescribed to help manage the symptoms of depression. These medications can help balance chemicals in the brain that affect mood.

3. Mindfulness and Acceptance-Based Therapies: While not specifically labeled as EMPR, mindfulness practices can be integrated into various therapeutic approaches. Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) are examples of therapies that incorporate mindfulness techniques to help individuals manage their depression.

4. Supportive Therapy: Engaging in supportive therapy can provide individuals with a safe space to express their feelings and experiences, which can be beneficial in the recovery process.

5. Lifestyle Changes: Encouraging regular physical activity, a balanced diet, and good sleep hygiene can significantly impact mood and overall mental health.

For your child, it is crucial to consult with a qualified mental health professional who specializes in treating children and adolescents. They can provide a comprehensive evaluation and recommend an appropriate treatment plan based on your child's specific needs. In Taipei, there are several hospitals and clinics that offer mental health services, including:
- Taipei Medical University Hospital
- National Taiwan University Hospital
- Veterans General Hospital
- Taipei City Hospital (various branches)
- Chang Gung Memorial Hospital
These institutions typically have psychiatric departments with professionals who can assess and treat depression in children and adolescents. It is advisable to contact these hospitals directly to inquire about their specific services, availability of child psychiatrists, and any potential waiting lists.

In addition to seeking treatment, consider involving your child in support groups or community resources that focus on mental health. These can provide additional support and help your child feel less isolated in their experience.

Lastly, it is essential to maintain open communication with your child about their feelings and experiences. Encouraging them to express themselves and reassuring them that seeking help is a positive step can foster a supportive environment conducive to healing.

In summary, while EMPR may not be a recognized treatment for depression, there are numerous effective therapies available. Seeking help from qualified professionals in Taipei will be crucial in finding the right approach for your child's mental health needs.
