Labial swelling and pain
I'm not sure if I'm asking in the right department...
Every morning when I wake up, I feel swelling and pain on the left labium.
I thought it was just because I needed to use the restroom, but today while showering, I suddenly noticed a painful area on the left labium, and it seems like there is a small growth.
I'm unsure which specialist I should see, and I hope the doctor can provide guidance.
Thank you.

More Info
When experiencing painful swelling in the labia, it is important to consider several potential causes and appropriate solutions. The symptoms you describe, particularly the swelling and pain on the left labium, along with the discovery of a lump, could be indicative of various conditions. Here are some common causes and recommendations for addressing the issue.
Possible Causes
1. Bartholin's Cyst: One of the most common causes of a lump in the labia is a Bartholin's cyst. This occurs when the Bartholin's glands, located at the 4 o'clock and 8 o'clock positions of the vaginal opening, become blocked. This blockage can lead to swelling and pain, especially if the cyst becomes infected.
2. Infections: Infections, such as bacterial vaginosis or sexually transmitted infections (STIs) like herpes or gonorrhea, can cause swelling and pain in the labia. These infections may also present with additional symptoms such as unusual discharge, itching, or burning sensations.
3. Allergic Reactions or Irritation: Sometimes, irritation from soaps, detergents, or personal care products can lead to localized swelling and discomfort. Allergic reactions to these substances can also cause similar symptoms.
4. Vulvar Varicosities: Similar to varicose veins in the legs, vulvar varicosities can occur during pregnancy or due to increased pressure in the pelvic area, leading to swelling and discomfort.
5. Dermatological Conditions: Conditions such as lichen sclerosus or vulvar dermatitis can cause swelling and pain in the labial area. These conditions may require specific treatments to manage symptoms.
Recommendations
1. Consult a Healthcare Provider: It is crucial to see a healthcare provider, preferably a gynecologist, to evaluate the lump and swelling. They can perform a physical examination and may recommend tests to determine the underlying cause.
2. Avoid Irritants: In the meantime, avoid using any harsh soaps, scented products, or irritants in the genital area. Opt for mild, unscented products to minimize irritation.
3. Warm Compresses: Applying a warm compress to the affected area may help alleviate discomfort and reduce swelling. This can promote drainage if there is a cyst or localized infection.
4. Over-the-Counter Pain Relief: If the pain is significant, over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen may help manage discomfort.
5. Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of any additional symptoms that may develop, such as fever, increased redness, or discharge, and report these to your healthcare provider.
6. Avoid Sexual Activity: Until you have been evaluated by a healthcare provider, it may be wise to avoid sexual activity to prevent further irritation or potential transmission of infections.
Conclusion
Painful swelling in the labia can arise from various causes, and it is essential to seek medical evaluation to determine the appropriate diagnosis and treatment. Early intervention can help prevent complications and provide relief from symptoms. Remember, your health and comfort are paramount, so do not hesitate to reach out to a healthcare professional for guidance.
