Right abdominal pain?

Hello: Recently, I have been feeling a bloated sensation in my right abdomen (approximately eight centimeters above the navel on the right side).
When I press on it with my hand, I feel nauseous; after eating, while walking, I experience a tightness in my right abdomen extending to my waist, and sometimes I even feel short of breath.
What could this problem be? Thank you for your response.

Hello, Xiao Ming.
The pain in your upper right abdomen may be due to liver inflammation, gallbladder inflammation, peptic ulcer, gastric colic, or tendonitis.
It is recommended that you visit a family medicine clinic for further evaluation and follow-up.
Thank you.

Right abdominal pain can be a complex issue with various potential causes, and your symptoms suggest that there may be several factors at play. The discomfort you describe, particularly the sensation of fullness or pressure in the right upper quadrant of your abdomen, along with feelings of nausea and tightness that radiates to your waist, could be indicative of several underlying conditions.

First, let’s consider some common causes of right upper abdominal pain. One of the most frequent culprits is gallbladder disease, which can manifest as gallstones or cholecystitis (inflammation of the gallbladder). Symptoms often include pain in the right upper quadrant, especially after eating fatty meals, and can be accompanied by nausea or vomiting. Another possibility is liver-related issues, particularly given your history of chronic hepatitis B. Liver inflammation or other hepatic conditions can lead to discomfort in the right upper abdomen.

Additionally, gastrointestinal issues such as gastritis or peptic ulcers can cause pain in this area, especially if they are aggravated by certain foods or stress. The sensation of tightness and discomfort while walking could also suggest a muscular or skeletal issue, particularly if you have been engaging in activities that strain your abdominal muscles or back.

It’s also important to consider the role of anxiety and stress in your symptoms. Anxiety can manifest physically in various ways, including abdominal discomfort, tightness, and even shortness of breath. The mind-body connection is powerful, and stress can exacerbate physical symptoms, leading to a cycle of discomfort and anxiety. If you are prone to anxiety, it might be beneficial to explore relaxation techniques or speak with a mental health professional to address these concerns.

Given the complexity of your symptoms, it is crucial to seek a thorough evaluation from a healthcare provider. They may recommend imaging studies, such as an ultrasound or CT scan, to assess the organs in your abdomen and rule out any serious conditions. Blood tests may also be necessary to check liver function and other relevant markers.

In summary, while there are many potential causes for your right abdominal pain, including gallbladder disease, liver issues, gastrointestinal problems, and the influence of anxiety, a comprehensive medical evaluation is essential to determine the exact cause. It’s important not to ignore these symptoms, especially if they persist or worsen. Early diagnosis and treatment can lead to better outcomes and relief from discomfort. Please consult with your healthcare provider to discuss your symptoms in detail and explore the appropriate diagnostic steps.
