Does radiation from wireless base stations affect the fetus?

Hello, Doctor: Recently, I set up a wireless router at home.
I noticed that when it was placed in the living room, I experienced headaches while connected (similar to headaches caused by radiation waves when using a mobile phone).
Therefore, I moved the router to the bedroom.
Although I usually don't feel any discomfort, I recently discovered that I am pregnant.
Will the radiation from the wireless router affect the fetus? Should I remove it? Thank you.

Stella, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2004/10/05

Dr. Li Guanghan reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello: It is best to remove it, as strong radiation waves may affect the fetus.

The concern regarding the potential effects of wireless router radiation on fetal development is a topic that has garnered attention in recent years, particularly as more households rely on wireless technology. To address your question, it is important to understand the nature of the radiation emitted by wireless routers and the current scientific consensus on its effects, especially during pregnancy.

Wireless routers emit radiofrequency (RF) electromagnetic fields (EMF) as part of their operation. This type of radiation is non-ionizing, meaning it does not carry enough energy to ionize atoms or molecules or remove tightly bound electrons. Ionizing radiation, such as X-rays, is known to pose risks to fetal development, particularly at high doses. However, the levels of RF radiation emitted by wireless routers are significantly lower than those associated with ionizing radiation.

Research on the effects of RF radiation on human health, particularly in relation to pregnancy and fetal development, has been extensive but remains inconclusive. The World Health Organization (WHO) and various health agencies have stated that, based on current evidence, exposure to low-level RF fields, such as those from wireless routers, does not appear to pose a significant health risk. The effective doses of radiation from wireless routers are typically much lower than the exposure limits set by international guidelines.

In your case, if you are experiencing headaches when near the wireless router, it may be more related to other factors, such as the electromagnetic fields from the device or even psychological factors associated with the awareness of being near a source of radiation. However, it is essential to listen to your body and take steps to minimize discomfort. Moving the router to a location where you feel more comfortable is a reasonable approach.

Regarding your pregnancy, the consensus among health professionals is that the levels of RF radiation from wireless routers are unlikely to have any adverse effects on fetal development. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) has not issued specific guidelines against the use of wireless devices during pregnancy, as the evidence does not support significant risks.

If you are still concerned about the potential effects of wireless radiation on your pregnancy, you may consider the following precautions:
1. Distance: Keep the wireless router at a distance from your living and sleeping areas. Increasing the distance can significantly reduce your exposure to RF radiation.

2. Limit Use: If possible, limit the time spent near the router, especially during the early stages of pregnancy when fetal development is critical.

3. Use Wired Connections: Consider using wired internet connections (Ethernet) for devices that do not require mobility. This can help reduce your exposure to RF radiation.

4. Monitor Symptoms: If you continue to experience headaches or other symptoms, consult with a healthcare professional to explore other potential causes.

In conclusion, while it is understandable to be concerned about any potential risks during pregnancy, the current scientific evidence suggests that the radiation from wireless routers is unlikely to affect fetal development adversely. If you feel more comfortable removing the router or taking additional precautions, that is entirely your choice. Always prioritize your comfort and well-being during this important time.
