Respiratory issues
Sometimes when I sleep, my breathing seems to become rapid, as if I'm gasping for air.
When sitting in a chair or after eating too much, I feel like I have to breathe heavily.
If my breathing suddenly becomes difficult, my heart rate increases, and I feel anxious with cold hands and feet.
I'm not sure what the problem is.
Sometimes when I inhale, I experience pain in the left chest area and between my chest, but it usually resolves after a while.
Previously, I went to a large hospital for an examination, where they performed an electrocardiogram, drew arterial and venous blood, and tested my thyroid, all of which came back normal.
However, after returning home, I still occasionally struggle to breathe.
Sometimes I feel pain in my chest while breathing, and I often feel very thirsty and have a strong desire to drink water.
At times, I notice my heart beating very hard and fast.
I'm unsure where to seek further evaluation and would like to request medical assistance.

Dr. Ke Zhengchang reply Internal Medicine
Hello, Miss Xiao Xiao: Abdominal bloating can reduce lung capacity and lead to difficulty in breathing.
It is advisable to eat smaller meals more frequently and engage in regular exercise.
Additionally, please follow up with the hospital for lung function tests and an electrocardiogram.
Avoid coffee and tea.

Breathing issues can be quite distressing, and it’s understandable to seek clarity on the causes and when to seek medical help. Based on the symptoms you’ve described—rapid breathing, chest pain, feelings of tightness, and episodes of difficulty breathing—there are several potential explanations and avenues for further investigation.
Firstly, it’s important to recognize that breathing difficulties can stem from a variety of causes, including respiratory, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, and even psychological factors. Given that you have already undergone several tests, including an electrocardiogram (ECG), blood tests, and thyroid function tests, it seems that serious cardiac or thyroid issues have been ruled out. However, it’s crucial to consider other possibilities.
1. Respiratory Conditions: Conditions such as asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) can cause symptoms like shortness of breath and chest tightness. Asthma, in particular, can be triggered by allergens, cold air, or even stress. If you haven’t already, a pulmonary function test (spirometry) could help assess how well your lungs are working and whether there is any obstruction.
2. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): Sometimes, acid reflux can cause chest pain and breathing difficulties, especially if the acid irritates the esophagus or if it leads to aspiration into the lungs. If you experience heartburn or a sour taste in your mouth, discussing this possibility with a gastroenterologist might be beneficial.
3. Anxiety and Panic Disorders: Your description of feeling cold, having a rapid heartbeat, and experiencing tightness in your chest could also indicate anxiety or panic attacks. These episodes can mimic respiratory distress and may occur in response to stress or anxiety. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) or other forms of counseling can be effective in managing anxiety-related symptoms.
4. Allergic Reactions: Given your mention of feeling better in different environments, it’s possible that you might be experiencing allergic reactions that could lead to nasal congestion and subsequent breathing difficulties. An allergist can perform tests to identify specific allergens that may be affecting you.
5. Musculoskeletal Issues: Sometimes, pain in the chest can be related to musculoskeletal problems, such as costochondritis, which is inflammation of the cartilage connecting the ribs to the sternum. This can cause sharp pain that may worsen with deep breaths or certain movements.
6. Sleep Apnea: If your breathing issues are more pronounced during sleep, it may be worth investigating sleep apnea, a condition where breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep. This can lead to fragmented sleep and daytime fatigue, along with cardiovascular strain.
Given the complexity of your symptoms, it may be beneficial to consult with a multidisciplinary team of specialists. A pulmonologist can evaluate your lung function, while a cardiologist can ensure that your heart is functioning well. Additionally, a psychologist or psychiatrist can help address any anxiety or panic-related symptoms.
In the meantime, consider keeping a symptom diary to track when your symptoms occur, their duration, and any potential triggers. This information can be invaluable for your healthcare providers in diagnosing and managing your condition.
Lastly, if you ever experience severe shortness of breath, chest pain that feels like pressure, or if you faint or feel dizzy, seek emergency medical attention immediately, as these could be signs of a serious condition.
In conclusion, while your previous tests have not indicated any serious underlying conditions, the persistence of your symptoms warrants further exploration. Engaging with healthcare professionals who can take a comprehensive approach to your symptoms will be key in finding relief and understanding the root cause of your breathing difficulties.
