Breast augmentation
Hello Doctor: I am 42 years old and have underdeveloped breasts, which I fear may be difficult to improve at this stage.
My daughter is currently in her teenage years, and I wonder if there are ways to help her achieve a healthy and curvy figure, such as specific foods to eat or exercises to do.
Which medical specialty or beauty center should I consult for this issue? Sincerely, Ah-Hui.
A-Hui, 40~49 year old female. Ask Date: 2001/04/08
Dr. Luo Qihua reply Plastic Surgery
The size of the breasts is primarily influenced by genetics.
Currently, there is no medical literature indicating that any specific food can increase breast size.
As for certain creams or products advertised for breast enhancement (such as lactation pills), I believe they may contain a significant amount of female hormones, which can provide a temporary increase in breast size, but once discontinued, the breasts return to their original state.
Therefore, for adolescent girls, maintaining a balanced diet and cultivating a healthy mindset is sufficient; the rest is up to nature.
Regarding exercises that can increase breast size, while exercise can strengthen the underlying muscles (pectoralis major), it does not increase the size of the breasts themselves.
This may lead to an increase in chest circumference, but cup size remains largely unchanged.
I am truly unaware of any exercises or dietary changes that can increase breast size, and I apologize for that.

More Info
Enhancing breast development during adolescence is a common concern for many mothers and their daughters. It is important to understand that breast size and development are primarily influenced by genetics, hormonal changes, and overall body composition. While there are no guaranteed methods to significantly increase breast size, there are several strategies that can promote healthy development and body image during this critical period.
Understanding Breast Development
Breast development typically begins during puberty, which can start as early as age 8 and continue into the late teens. The process is driven by hormonal changes, particularly the increase in estrogen levels. It is essential to recognize that each individual develops at their own pace, and variations in breast size and shape are completely normal.
Nutritional Considerations
A balanced diet is crucial for supporting overall growth and development during adolescence. While no specific foods have been scientifically proven to increase breast size, a nutritious diet can help maintain a healthy body weight and hormonal balance. Here are some dietary recommendations:
1. Protein-Rich Foods: Incorporate lean proteins such as chicken, fish, beans, and legumes. Protein is essential for growth and tissue repair.
2. Healthy Fats: Include sources of healthy fats such as avocados, nuts, seeds, and olive oil. These fats are important for hormone production.
3. Fruits and Vegetables: A variety of colorful fruits and vegetables provide essential vitamins and minerals that support overall health.
4. Whole Grains: Choose whole grains like brown rice, quinoa, and whole wheat bread for sustained energy and fiber.
5. Hydration: Encourage adequate water intake to support metabolic processes and overall health.
Exercise and Physical Activity
Regular physical activity is vital for maintaining a healthy body composition and promoting self-esteem. While exercise does not directly increase breast size, it can enhance muscle tone and improve posture, which can create a more flattering appearance. Here are some exercise recommendations:
1. Strength Training: Incorporate exercises that target the chest muscles, such as push-ups, chest presses, and dumbbell flys. Strengthening the pectoral muscles can enhance the overall appearance of the chest.
2. Cardiovascular Exercise: Activities like running, swimming, or cycling can help maintain a healthy weight and improve cardiovascular health.
3. Flexibility and Posture: Incorporate yoga or Pilates to improve flexibility and posture, which can positively affect body image.
Psychological Well-Being
It is essential to foster a positive body image and self-esteem during this time. Encourage open communication about body changes and feelings. Remind your daughter that everyone develops differently, and it is important to focus on health rather than comparison with peers.
Professional Guidance
If there are concerns about breast development or body image, consider consulting with a healthcare professional, such as a pediatrician or an endocrinologist. They can provide personalized advice and assess whether any underlying hormonal issues may be affecting development.
Conclusion
In summary, while there are no specific foods or exercises that can guarantee breast enlargement, a balanced diet, regular exercise, and a positive mindset can support healthy development during adolescence. Emphasizing overall health and well-being is the best approach for both mothers and daughters navigating this stage of life.
