After an abortion..?

Doctor, I had an abortion procedure, and I still have swelling in my breasts.
What could be the reason for this? Also, after eating, my lower abdomen tends to become distended.
I had the procedure on October 23, and I started experiencing bleeding on the 27th, which has now decreased and turned into brown discharge.
Should I return for a follow-up appointment?

Xiao Yu, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2004/10/31

1.
During pregnancy, breast swelling may occur, which can happen even before an abortion, but you may not have noticed it.
2.
It's normal to have a little spotting, but the doctor will want you to return for a follow-up after the procedure to ensure there are no issues.
Thank you!

More Info

After undergoing an abortion, it is not uncommon for women to experience various physical symptoms, including breast swelling and abdominal distension. These symptoms can be attributed to hormonal changes, fluid retention, and the body's natural healing process.

Breast Swelling
Breast swelling after an abortion can occur due to hormonal fluctuations. During pregnancy, the body produces higher levels of hormones such as estrogen and progesterone, which prepare the breasts for lactation. After an abortion, these hormone levels can drop significantly, but it may take some time for the body to adjust. This adjustment period can lead to temporary swelling or tenderness in the breasts. Additionally, if you were breastfeeding prior to the abortion, your body may still be producing milk, which can also contribute to breast fullness and swelling.

If the swelling is accompanied by severe pain, redness, or any unusual discharge, it is essential to consult a healthcare provider, as these could be signs of an infection or other complications.

Abdominal Distension
The sensation of abdominal distension after eating can be attributed to several factors. Post-abortion, your body is still recovering, and the digestive system may be affected by the hormonal changes and stress of the procedure. The abdominal muscles and organs may also be adjusting after the physical changes of pregnancy and the abortion itself.

Additionally, if you experienced any gastrointestinal issues prior to the abortion, such as bloating or gas, these may be exacerbated during the recovery period. It's also worth noting that emotional stress can impact digestion, leading to symptoms like bloating or discomfort.

Post-Abortion Bleeding
Regarding the bleeding you mentioned, it is normal to experience some bleeding after an abortion, which can vary in color and intensity. Initially, you may have heavier bleeding that tapers off to lighter spotting, which can be brownish in color as the body expels remaining tissue and blood. The transition from bright red blood to brown discharge is typically a sign that the bleeding is subsiding and is often considered normal.

However, if you experience heavy bleeding (soaking through a pad in an hour), severe pain, or fever, it is crucial to seek medical attention immediately, as these could be signs of complications such as retained products of conception or infection.

When to Return for Follow-Up
It is advisable to have a follow-up appointment after an abortion, typically within a week or two, to ensure that your body is healing properly. If you are still experiencing significant symptoms such as breast swelling, abdominal distension, or unusual bleeding patterns, it would be prudent to contact your healthcare provider for advice. They may recommend an examination or ultrasound to ensure that everything is healing as expected.

In summary, while some degree of breast swelling and abdominal distension can be normal after an abortion due to hormonal changes and the body’s recovery process, it is essential to monitor your symptoms closely. If you have any concerns or if your symptoms worsen, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for further evaluation and guidance. Your health and well-being are paramount, and open communication with your healthcare team is vital during this recovery period.
