Is Steroid Injection for Cystic Acne Available in Taiwan? - Dermatology

Share to:

Could you please clarify if there is such a treatment available?

Hello Dr.
Huang...
When I was studying in the north, I once visited Chang Gung Hospital for my acne.
The doctors there recommended injecting a small amount of corticosteroid directly into the cystic acne, which I found to be quite effective for me.
Does Shushi Hospital offer this type of injection treatment? Can patients request to receive this injection themselves?

Dr. Huang Ruiyun reply Dermatology

1.
There are two factors to consider.
The decision should be made by a physician.
Very small acne should not be injected, as it can lead to skin atrophy.
If the acne is already pustular, it is too late for injection.

Steroid injections for cystic acne are indeed a treatment option available in Taiwan, particularly in dermatology clinics and hospitals. Cystic acne, characterized by painful, inflamed nodules beneath the skin, can be particularly challenging to treat. In cases where cystic acne is present, dermatologists may recommend corticosteroid injections as a rapid and effective way to reduce inflammation and promote healing.

Corticosteroids, such as triamcinolone acetonide, are commonly used for this purpose. When injected directly into the cyst, these steroids work by reducing inflammation and swelling, which can lead to a significant decrease in pain and a faster resolution of the acne lesion. This treatment is particularly beneficial for large, painful cysts that may not respond well to topical treatments or oral medications.

In Taiwan, many dermatology departments in hospitals, including those affiliated with major medical centers, offer this treatment. Patients can typically request this type of injection during their consultation with a dermatologist. However, it is essential to have a thorough evaluation by a qualified healthcare professional before proceeding with any treatment. The dermatologist will assess the severity of the acne, the patient's medical history, and any potential contraindications to steroid use.

While corticosteroid injections can be effective, they are not without risks. Potential side effects include skin thinning, discoloration, and, in some cases, the formation of small blood vessels on the skin's surface. Therefore, it is crucial for patients to discuss the benefits and risks of this treatment with their dermatologist.

In addition to steroid injections, there are other treatment options available for cystic acne, including oral antibiotics, hormonal therapies, and isotretinoin for more severe cases. Each treatment has its own set of benefits and potential side effects, and the choice of therapy should be tailored to the individual patient's needs and circumstances.

If you are considering this treatment, it is advisable to consult with a dermatologist at a reputable hospital or clinic in Taiwan. They can provide you with detailed information about the procedure, expected outcomes, and any necessary follow-up care. You may also inquire about the availability of this treatment at specific hospitals, such as Chang Gung Memorial Hospital or other local facilities.

In summary, steroid injections for cystic acne are available in Taiwan and can be an effective treatment option. Patients can request this treatment during their dermatology consultations, but it is essential to have a comprehensive evaluation to ensure it is appropriate for their specific condition. Always prioritize open communication with your healthcare provider to make informed decisions about your acne treatment plan.
