Can the glans penis undergo necrosis?
Hello Doctor, I've been experiencing a grayish-white sensation on my glans for the past month.
My girlfriend described it as looking somewhat like foundation makeup.
About two months ago, while masturbating, I was a bit vigorous during one session, and since then, I've felt something unusual.
A previous doctor suggested it might be psychological, but I feel that my glans is not as sensitive as it used to be.
Now I've noticed a change in color, and I'm worried that I might have damaged a blood vessel, causing this grayish-white appearance, especially on the underside of the glans where it's more pronounced.
Is this serious? Should I see a doctor immediately? Thank you for your response.

Hello: Based on your situation, it seems that psychological factors are more likely involved.
Generally, the glans does not undergo necrosis, and blood vessels are not easily completely severed.
Recommendation: Apply a warm towel locally for about 10-15 minutes each time; this should help improve the condition.
If you are still concerned, please visit the outpatient clinic.
Sincerely,
Dr.

When it comes to changes in the appearance of the glans (the head of the penis), such as a gray or whitish discoloration, it is essential to approach the situation with caution and seek medical advice. The symptoms you describe, including the change in color and reduced sensitivity, can be concerning and may indicate an underlying issue that requires attention.
There are several potential causes for the discoloration of the glans. One possibility is a condition known as leukoplakia, which is characterized by white patches on mucous membranes. This can be caused by irritation, friction, or trauma, such as vigorous masturbation, which you mentioned. It is also important to consider other dermatological conditions, such as lichen sclerosus, which can cause white patches and changes in skin texture. In some cases, sexually transmitted infections (STIs) can also lead to changes in the appearance of the genital area, so it is crucial to rule these out.
The fact that you experienced a change in sensitivity following a vigorous act may suggest that there was some trauma or irritation to the area. While it is unlikely that you have caused a blood vessel to rupture, the sensation of reduced sensitivity could be due to nerve irritation or damage. This is not uncommon after trauma, and in many cases, sensitivity can return over time. However, if the discoloration persists or worsens, or if you experience pain, discomfort, or other unusual symptoms, it is essential to seek medical attention promptly.
In terms of when to see a doctor, it is advisable to do so if:
1. The discoloration does not improve or worsens over time.
2. You experience pain, itching, or any unusual discharge.
3. There are any changes in urination or sexual function.
4. You have concerns about sexually transmitted infections or other health issues.
A healthcare professional, particularly a urologist or dermatologist specializing in genital health, can provide a thorough examination and may perform tests to determine the underlying cause of your symptoms. They may also recommend treatment options based on the diagnosis, which could range from topical treatments for irritation to more specific therapies for infections or skin conditions.
In summary, while changes in the color of the glans can be caused by various factors, it is essential to take these symptoms seriously. Given your description of the situation, it would be prudent to schedule an appointment with a healthcare provider to ensure that any potential issues are addressed early on. Taking proactive steps in your health care can lead to better outcomes and peace of mind.
