Is it menstruation or a miscarriage?

I consulted a doctor because my menstrual cycle has always been regular, but my period was 3 days late in November.
I went to the hospital for a urine test, and the doctor informed me that I was pregnant.
However, just 4 days later, I started bleeding, and today marks the 12th day of bleeding (the flow is very light, and the color is no longer bright red, but still has a pinkish hue).
Is this my menstrual period (could the urine test have been incorrect?), or is it a miscarriage? I really want to know...
If I go for another check-up now, will I be able to find out the answer?

When faced with the question of whether the bleeding experienced during early pregnancy is menstruation or a miscarriage, it is essential to understand the various possibilities and the signs that can help differentiate between the two.
In your case, you mentioned that your menstrual cycle is usually regular, and you received a positive pregnancy test after your period was late by three days. However, shortly after, you began to experience bleeding that has persisted for 12 days, albeit with a reduced volume and a change in color to pinkish rather than bright red. This situation can understandably cause confusion and concern.

Firstly, it is important to note that light bleeding or spotting in early pregnancy can occur for several reasons. One common cause is implantation bleeding, which can happen when the fertilized egg attaches to the lining of the uterus. This type of bleeding is typically light and may last for a few hours to a few days. However, since your bleeding has persisted for 12 days, it is less likely to be implantation bleeding.

Another possibility is that the bleeding could be a sign of a threatened miscarriage. Early pregnancy loss can occur in about 10-20% of known pregnancies, and symptoms can include bleeding and cramping. However, not all bleeding in early pregnancy indicates a miscarriage. Some women experience bleeding without any adverse effects on the pregnancy.
Given that your bleeding has lasted for an extended period, it is advisable to seek medical attention. A healthcare provider can perform a transvaginal ultrasound to assess the status of the pregnancy. This imaging can help determine whether the pregnancy is progressing normally and if there is a heartbeat present. Additionally, blood tests measuring the levels of beta-hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) can provide further insight. In a healthy early pregnancy, beta-hCG levels typically rise significantly every 48 hours.

If the ultrasound shows that the pregnancy is developing normally and there is a heartbeat, then the bleeding may be attributed to other benign causes, such as cervical irritation or a subchorionic hematoma (a collection of blood between the uterine wall and the chorion, the outer fetal membrane).
On the other hand, if the ultrasound indicates that the pregnancy is not viable or if there is no heartbeat detected, then it may confirm a miscarriage. In such cases, the healthcare provider will discuss the next steps, which may include monitoring the situation or considering medical intervention if necessary.

In conclusion, while light bleeding can occur in early pregnancy, the duration and characteristics of your bleeding warrant further evaluation. It is crucial to consult with your healthcare provider as soon as possible to obtain a definitive answer regarding the status of your pregnancy. Early intervention and monitoring can provide peace of mind and ensure that you receive the appropriate care based on your individual circumstances.
