Am I Infertile? Seeking Answers After Having One Child - Urology

Will I be infertile?

I already have a four-year-old daughter, and since last year, I stopped using condoms for contraception because I plan to have another child.
However, after more than a year of trying, there has been no success.
I would like to ask if having a child already increases the chances of infertility? If I want to consult a doctor, which physician in Keelung would be most suitable?

A Long, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2004/11/23

Dr. Xu Weikai reply Urology

A-Lung: Hello! Based on your situation, the possibility of infertility cannot be completely ruled out.
The simplest way to get an idea of the situation is to visit a nearby laboratory for a semen analysis.
If everything is normal, then it may be an issue on the female's side.
Additionally, statistics show that if the female partner is over 35 years old, even if everything is normal, the chances of conception decrease.
As for doctors in the Keelung area, I recommend visiting Keelung Hospital (you can consult Dr.
Hong or Dr.
Xu) or Chang Gung Memorial Hospital.
The Taitung Hospital of the Department of Health is concerned about your urology issues.
Director Xu Wei-Kai responds.

It’s understandable to have concerns about fertility, especially after successfully having one child and then experiencing difficulty in conceiving again. The fact that you have a four-year-old daughter indicates that you were able to conceive in the past, which is a positive sign. However, it is not uncommon for couples to face challenges when trying to conceive again, even after having a child.

There are several factors that could contribute to difficulties in conceiving after having a child. These can include age, changes in health, lifestyle factors, and even stress. As women age, their fertility naturally declines, particularly after the age of 35. If you are in this age range, it might be worth considering how age could be affecting your fertility. Additionally, health issues such as hormonal imbalances, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), or other medical conditions can also impact fertility.

For men, fertility can also be affected by various factors, including hormonal levels, sperm quality, and lifestyle choices such as smoking, alcohol consumption, and weight. If you are concerned about your fertility, it may be beneficial to evaluate both partners' health and lifestyle choices.

Since you have been trying to conceive for over a year without success, it may be a good idea to consult a fertility specialist. In general, if a couple has been trying to conceive for a year without success, it is recommended to seek medical advice. The evaluation may include a thorough medical history, physical examinations, and possibly some tests to assess fertility for both partners.

In terms of finding a suitable doctor in Keelung, Taiwan, you may want to consider looking for a reproductive endocrinologist or a fertility specialist. These professionals are trained to deal with issues related to infertility and can provide a comprehensive evaluation and treatment options. You can start by checking with local hospitals or clinics that specialize in reproductive health. Additionally, seeking recommendations from friends, family, or your primary care physician can help you find a reputable specialist.

When you visit a fertility specialist, be prepared to discuss your medical history, any previous pregnancies, and any lifestyle factors that may be relevant. The doctor may recommend tests such as blood tests to check hormone levels, ultrasound examinations, or semen analysis for your partner. Based on the findings, they can suggest appropriate treatment options, which may include lifestyle changes, medication, or assisted reproductive technologies like in vitro fertilization (IVF) if necessary.

In conclusion, while having one child does not guarantee that you will not face challenges in conceiving again, it is important to remember that many couples experience similar situations. Seeking medical advice is a proactive step that can help you understand your fertility status and explore potential options for expanding your family. Remember to take care of your overall health and well-being during this process, as stress and anxiety can also impact fertility. Good luck, and I hope you find the answers you are looking for!
