Over-the-Counter Eye Drops: Relief for Tired and Dry Eyes - Pharmacology

Over-the-counter eye drops

I don't have myopia, but recently my eyes always feel sore, gritty, and uncomfortable.
I guess it might be due to insomnia and spending a long time in front of the computer working on reports without giving my eyes proper rest.
Rubbing them hasn't helped.
I'm thinking about buying over-the-counter eye drops, like Rohto eye drops available at Watsons.
Is that okay? I've also heard that saline solution can be used; is that true? Would it be harmful? If I no longer feel uncomfortable in the future, can I continue to use them? Is there a recommended duration for using them after opening? Thank you.

Dr. Liao Huiling reply Pharmacology

Hello! For general eye fatigue and dryness, you can use eye drops that contain B vitamins or artificial tears.
However, eye drops that contain steroids or antibiotics should not be purchased or used casually, and they are not recommended for long-term use.
Regarding the eye drops you mentioned, "Rohto," I cannot determine their suitability without knowing the specific ingredients.
It is advisable to consult a physician or ask a pharmacist at the store before using them to ensure safe medication use!

Over-the-Counter (OTC) eye drops can indeed provide relief for tired and dry eyes, especially in situations where prolonged screen time and lack of sleep contribute to discomfort. Your symptoms of eye strain, dryness, and discomfort are common among individuals who spend extended periods in front of screens, and they can be exacerbated by inadequate sleep.
When considering OTC eye drops, it's important to choose the right type for your specific symptoms. For dry eyes, artificial tears are typically recommended. These drops are designed to mimic natural tears and provide lubrication to the eye surface, helping to alleviate dryness and discomfort. Brands like Rohto and Refresh are popular and widely available in pharmacies. They can help to hydrate your eyes and provide temporary relief from dryness.

Regarding saline solutions, while they can be used to rinse the eyes, they do not provide the same moisturizing benefits as artificial tears. Saline solutions are primarily used for cleaning and are not formulated to relieve dryness. Therefore, it is advisable to opt for artificial tears rather than saline if your primary concern is dryness and discomfort.

As for the frequency of use, many artificial tear products can be used as often as needed, but it is essential to read the instructions on the packaging. Some formulations are preservative-free and can be used more frequently without the risk of irritation. If you find that you need to use eye drops multiple times a day, it may be worth consulting with an eye care professional to ensure there are no underlying issues that need to be addressed.

Once opened, most eye drop bottles have a shelf life of about 30 days, but this can vary by product. Always check the label for specific expiration information. After this period, the effectiveness of the drops may diminish, and using them could potentially introduce bacteria into your eyes, leading to infections.

If your symptoms persist despite using OTC eye drops, or if you experience significant discomfort, it is advisable to seek professional medical advice. An eye care professional can assess your symptoms more thoroughly and may recommend additional treatments or lifestyle changes to help alleviate your discomfort.
In summary, OTC eye drops can be a helpful solution for managing dry and tired eyes, particularly in the context of prolonged screen use and insufficient rest. Choose artificial tears over saline solutions for effective relief, and be mindful of the product's expiration date after opening. If symptoms persist, do not hesitate to consult with an eye care professional for further evaluation and management.

Can Cyanocobalamin Eye Drops Help Relieve Eye Fatigue?

Cyanocobalamin 0.2mg and Thimerosal 0.01mg (Oasis Industrial Eye Refresh Vitamin B12) can be used for the maintenance of eye health during times of eye fatigue. Thank you!

Dr. Hu Yusheng reply Ophthalmology
Thimerosal is a preservative, and using it more than four times a day can harm the cornea. The best way to maintain eye health is to get sufficient sleep and to rest your eyes by closing them or looking into the distance for fifteen minutes every thirty to fifty minutes of use.
