Will My Recent Abortion Affect My Fertility? - Obstetrics and Gynecology

Will I be infertile?

On November 23, I underwent a surgical abortion.
The doctor advised that for seven days, I should avoid heavy lifting, running, brisk walking, and standing for prolonged periods.
Additionally, I should not consume raw or cold foods, and I need to take my medication regularly.
Otherwise, it could lead to infertility in the future.
However, due to work commitments, I have to lift heavy objects and run or walk briskly every day, and I stand for ten and a half hours at work.
I haven't been diligent about taking my medication; I only take it when I remember.
Now, it's the seventh day, and I still haven't finished three days' worth of medication.
Since the surgery, I haven't experienced any bleeding, and no blood clots have passed.
I often feel weak in my arms and legs and have headaches.
I haven't followed the doctor's advice regarding my health.
Am I at risk of infertility in the future?

Dr. Zhuang Zhijian reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

After a surgical abortion, the instructions given by the doctor are very beneficial for your future physical recovery and maintenance.
As for whether infertility will occur, it is difficult to assess based on these circumstances.
However, it is best to take medications on time to prevent conditions such as endometritis and pelvic inflammatory disease.
If such unfortunate events do occur, the chances of infertility will significantly increase.

The concern regarding the impact of a recent abortion on future fertility is a common one, and it’s understandable to feel anxious about it, especially after undergoing a significant medical procedure. To address your question, let’s break down the factors involved.

Firstly, it’s important to clarify that a properly performed abortion, whether surgical or medical, typically does not have a long-term negative impact on fertility. Most women who have had an abortion can conceive again without any issues. However, certain factors can influence this outcome.

1. Type of Abortion: The method of abortion can play a role. Surgical abortions, when performed by a qualified healthcare provider, usually have a low risk of complications. However, complications such as infection or damage to the uterus can occur, which may affect future fertility. If you experienced any complications during your procedure, it would be wise to consult your healthcare provider.

2. Post-Abortion Care: Following an abortion, it is crucial to adhere to the post-operative care instructions provided by your doctor. This includes avoiding heavy lifting, strenuous exercise, and certain foods, as well as taking prescribed medications consistently. Not following these guidelines can increase the risk of complications such as infection or delayed healing, which could potentially affect your reproductive health.

3. Physical Symptoms: You mentioned experiencing weakness, headaches, and a lack of bleeding post-abortion. While some women may not experience significant bleeding after an abortion, persistent symptoms like weakness and headaches could indicate that your body is not recovering as it should. It’s essential to communicate these symptoms to your healthcare provider, as they may need to evaluate you for any complications.

4. Emotional and Mental Health: The emotional impact of an abortion can also affect your overall health and well-being. Stress and anxiety can influence hormonal balance and menstrual cycles, which in turn can affect fertility. It’s important to take care of your mental health during this time.

5. Future Fertility: If you continue to experience symptoms like weakness or if you have concerns about your menstrual cycle returning to normal, it’s advisable to seek medical advice. Your doctor may recommend tests to ensure that your reproductive system is functioning properly and to rule out any underlying issues.

In summary, while a recent abortion does not inherently lead to infertility, the way you care for yourself post-procedure is crucial. If you have not been following your doctor's advice, it’s important to reassess your situation and seek medical guidance. Regular follow-ups with your healthcare provider can help monitor your recovery and address any concerns you may have about your fertility moving forward. Remember, taking care of your physical and emotional health is vital during this time.
