I have bothersome keloids?
Hello, Dr.
Zheng: I have a predisposition to keloids.
Three years ago, I developed a small keloid behind my left earlobe, possibly due to not keeping my ear piercing clean.
Although the keloid has not been growing, I recently decided that I want to have it removed, but I'm unsure which hospital to go to for safe removal (I live in Tainan).
I also wanted to ask about the cost of keloid removal—what is the minimum and maximum price? Besides going to the hospital for removal, are there any other methods I can use to help it diminish on my own? Additionally, are there any dietary restrictions I should be aware of?
Pingguo, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2004/11/30
Dr. Zheng Lizhen reply Dermatology
Hello: Keloids do not resolve on their own, and food has no effect on them.
You can apply silicone sheets or use silicone ointment, or administer local steroid injections.
Sincerely, Dr.

More Info
Keloids, also known as hypertrophic scars, are raised areas of scar tissue that occur at the site of an injury or incision. They are more common in individuals with a predisposition to keloid formation, which is often genetic. In your case, since you have a keloid on your left earlobe, it is understandable that you would want to explore safe removal options.
When considering keloid removal, there are several methods available, each with its own risks, benefits, and costs. The most common surgical options include:
1. Surgical Excision: This is the most direct method where the keloid is surgically removed. However, there is a risk of recurrence, and in some cases, the new scar can also become a keloid. The cost for this procedure in Tainan can vary widely depending on the hospital and the complexity of the case, but you might expect to pay anywhere from NT$10,000 to NT$30,000 or more.
2. Intralesional Steroid Injections: This method involves injecting steroids directly into the keloid to reduce its size and inflammation. This is often used in conjunction with surgical excision to minimize recurrence. The cost for steroid injections is generally lower, ranging from NT$1,000 to NT$5,000 per session.
3. Cryotherapy: This involves freezing the keloid with liquid nitrogen, which can help reduce its size. This method is less invasive but may require multiple sessions. The cost can be similar to steroid injections.
4. Laser Therapy: Laser treatments can help flatten keloids and improve their appearance. This method is often used for cosmetic purposes and can be quite effective, but it may require several sessions. The cost can range from NT$5,000 to NT$20,000 per session.
5. Silicone Gel Sheets: These are non-invasive options that can be used at home to help flatten keloids over time. They are relatively inexpensive, costing around NT$500 to NT$2,000 for a pack that lasts several weeks.
In terms of dietary considerations, there is no specific food that has been scientifically proven to prevent keloid formation or promote their healing. However, maintaining a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals, particularly vitamin E and zinc, may support skin health. It is also advisable to stay hydrated and avoid smoking, as these factors can affect healing.
If you are considering removal, it is essential to consult with a qualified dermatologist or plastic surgeon who specializes in scar management. They can assess your keloid, discuss the most appropriate treatment options, and provide you with a detailed cost estimate. Additionally, they can inform you about the likelihood of recurrence and the best practices for post-removal care to minimize the risk of new keloid formation.
In summary, while there are several options for keloid removal, the choice of method should be based on a thorough discussion with a healthcare professional, considering factors such as the size and location of the keloid, your medical history, and your personal preferences regarding treatment.
