Delayed Period: Signs of Miscarriage or Just Irregular Cycles? - Obstetrics and Gynecology

Menstruation came nearly 18 days late?

Hello~ My period came 18 days late.
At first, I thought I was pregnant?? (I haven't tested yet) but it seems like my period has arrived.
Could it possibly be a miscarriage? What are the signs of a miscarriage? I'm currently experiencing bleeding; should I still take a pregnancy test? How can I distinguish between menstrual blood and other types of bleeding? My menstrual cycle has been irregular for the past year, and when I was on birth control pills, my flow was very light (extremely light).
Why is that? I have been taking birth control pills quite regularly, including emergency contraception...
I'm not taking them anymore.
Could the emergency contraception have disrupted my cycle? Should I see a doctor?

If you suspect you might be pregnant, you should go to the hospital for a urine test or undergo necessary examinations.
As you mentioned, there is certainly a possibility of miscarriage.
The use of contraceptive pills should be approached with caution and must be used correctly, as they are different from emergency contraceptive pills.
Incorrect usage can lead to adverse effects and may even result in future infertility.

When it comes to delayed periods, especially in the context of potential pregnancy or miscarriage, it is essential to understand the various factors at play. In your case, you mentioned that your period was delayed by 18 days, which understandably raises concerns about whether you might be pregnant or experiencing a miscarriage.
Firstly, it is important to clarify the signs of a miscarriage. Common symptoms include heavy bleeding (more than a typical menstrual flow), severe cramping, and the passing of tissue or clots. If you are experiencing bleeding that resembles your usual menstrual flow, it may simply be your period arriving late rather than a miscarriage. However, if the bleeding is significantly heavier than usual or accompanied by severe pain, it is advisable to seek medical attention promptly.

Regarding the possibility of pregnancy, if you suspect you might be pregnant, it is generally recommended to take a home pregnancy test. These tests are most accurate when taken after a missed period. Since you mentioned that your period is now arriving, it may be less likely that you are pregnant, but it is still worth verifying with a test, especially if the bleeding is lighter than usual or if you have other pregnancy symptoms.

You also mentioned irregular cycles and the use of emergency contraception (the "morning-after pill"). It is not uncommon for hormonal contraceptives, including emergency contraception, to disrupt your menstrual cycle temporarily. After taking such medications, some women experience changes in their menstrual patterns, including lighter periods or irregular cycles. This could explain the changes you've noticed in your menstrual flow and timing.

If you have been taking emergency contraception frequently, it can lead to hormonal fluctuations that may affect your cycle. It is important to note that while emergency contraception is safe for occasional use, it is not intended for regular birth control. If you find yourself needing emergency contraception often, it may be beneficial to discuss more reliable long-term contraceptive options with a healthcare provider.

In summary, if you are currently experiencing bleeding, it is essential to monitor the flow and any accompanying symptoms. If the bleeding is consistent with your normal menstrual cycle, it is likely just a late period. However, if you have concerns about the heaviness of the bleeding or if you experience severe pain, you should consult a healthcare professional. Additionally, taking a pregnancy test can provide clarity regarding your pregnancy status. If your menstrual irregularities continue or worsen, seeking medical advice is advisable to rule out any underlying issues and to discuss appropriate contraceptive methods.
