Acne on the skin?
Hello, doctor.
I have been developing bumps similar to pimples on my thighs near the knees, around my waist, and on my arms.
They appear intermittently (not very frequently), are pus-filled, and itchy.
They are painful when pressed lightly.
After they rupture, they leave scars.
What could this be? Do I need to see a doctor? How can I get rid of the scars? Thank you for your response.

Dr. Huang Ruiyun reply Dermatology
It is likely folliculitis, and it is difficult to make a definitive diagnosis online.
It is recommended to avoid using nylon bath towels, sponges, loofahs, and similar materials while bathing.
If there is a significant amount of pus and pain, it is advisable to see a doctor.

When it comes to skin bumps that resemble pimples, especially those that are painful, itchy, and produce pus, there are several potential causes to consider. These symptoms suggest that you may be dealing with a type of skin infection, such as folliculitis, which is an inflammation of the hair follicles often caused by bacteria, fungi, or irritation. Other possibilities include sebaceous cysts, which can become inflamed or infected, or even conditions like acne or hidradenitis suppurativa, which can also lead to painful bumps.
Given the description of your symptoms—painful, itchy bumps that produce pus and leave scars upon healing—it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional, preferably a dermatologist. They can provide a definitive diagnosis by examining the affected areas and may recommend treatments such as topical or oral antibiotics if an infection is present. If the bumps are due to folliculitis, treatment may include warm compresses, antibacterial washes, or topical antibiotics. In cases of cysts or more severe conditions, surgical intervention may be necessary.
As for the scarring, it is essential to address this as well. Scarring can occur when the skin is damaged, especially if the bumps are picked at or if they rupture. To minimize scarring, consider the following:
1. Avoid Picking: Refrain from squeezing or picking at the bumps, as this can worsen inflammation and increase the risk of scarring.
2. Keep the Area Clean: Gently cleanse the affected areas with a mild soap to prevent further irritation and infection.
3. Moisturize: Use a non-comedogenic moisturizer to keep the skin hydrated, which can help in the healing process.
4. Sun Protection: Protect the healing skin from sun exposure, as UV rays can darken scars. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.
5. Topical Treatments: Once the bumps have healed, you might consider using topical treatments that contain ingredients like silicone, vitamin E, or hydroquinone to help reduce the appearance of scars. Over-the-counter products containing alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) or retinoids can also promote skin renewal and improve the texture of the skin.
6. Consult a Dermatologist: If scarring is a significant concern, a dermatologist can offer treatments such as chemical peels, laser therapy, or microdermabrasion, which can help improve the appearance of scars.
In summary, while the symptoms you describe warrant a visit to a healthcare provider for accurate diagnosis and treatment, there are also steps you can take to care for your skin and minimize scarring. It’s crucial to address both the underlying cause of the skin bumps and the cosmetic concerns related to scarring to ensure comprehensive care.
