Regarding pubic lice issues?

Is it possible to cure pubic lice by applying medication without shaving the pubic hair? If I add bleach to the laundry, can it kill the lice and their eggs? What are the topical treatments available for pubic lice?

ben, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2004/12/09

Dr. Huang Ruiyun reply Dermatology

Shaving is much more effective, as the hair will grow back anyway.
If you don't shave, the medication cannot kill the eggs attached to the hair, and you will need to undergo treatment again in a week.
Clothes can generally be washed, and drying them is even better.
The ointment should be prescribed by a dermatologist or urologist, not an over-the-counter medication.

More Info

Pubic lice, also known as crab lice, are small parasitic insects that infest the hair in the pubic area. They can cause itching and discomfort, and their presence can be a source of embarrassment for many individuals. Effective treatment for pubic lice typically involves the use of topical insecticides, along with certain hygiene practices to eliminate the infestation and prevent re-infestation.

Effective Treatments for Pubic Lice
1. Topical Insecticides: The primary treatment for pubic lice involves the application of over-the-counter or prescription topical insecticides. Commonly used products include:
- Permethrin (Nix): A cream rinse that is applied to the affected area and left on for a specified period before rinsing off.

- Pyrethrins with Piperonyl Butoxide (Rid): A shampoo that works similarly to permethrin.

- Malathion (Ovide): A prescription lotion that is effective but has a strong odor and may require special handling.

- Ivermectin: An oral medication that may be prescribed in severe cases or when topical treatments fail.

2. Do's and Don'ts:
- Do follow the instructions on the product label carefully. Ensure that the treatment is applied to all affected areas, including the pubic region and any other areas where lice may be present (such as the thighs or abdomen).

- Do wash all clothing, bedding, and towels in hot water (at least 130°F or 54°C) and dry them on high heat to kill any lice or eggs that may be present.

- Do vacuum carpets and upholstered furniture to remove any stray lice or eggs.

- Don't shave or wax the pubic area as a treatment method. While shaving may remove visible lice, it does not eliminate the infestation and can lead to skin irritation or infection.

- Don't use multiple treatments at once unless directed by a healthcare provider, as this can lead to skin irritation or other complications.

Addressing Your Specific Questions
1. Can you cure pubic lice without shaving?: Yes, you can effectively treat pubic lice without shaving. The use of topical treatments, when applied correctly, can eliminate the lice and their eggs. Shaving is not necessary and may even complicate the treatment process.

2. Can bleach kill lice and eggs in laundry?: While bleach can kill lice and eggs, it is not recommended for use on clothing or bedding due to the potential for fabric damage. Instead, washing items in hot water and drying them on high heat is a safer and effective method for killing lice and their eggs.

3. What topical treatments are available for pubic lice?: As mentioned earlier, effective topical treatments include permethrin, pyrethrins with piperonyl butoxide, malathion, and in some cases, ivermectin. It is essential to choose a treatment that is specifically labeled for pubic lice, as some products are designed for head lice and may not be effective for pubic lice.

Conclusion
In summary, treating pubic lice effectively involves the use of appropriate topical insecticides and maintaining good hygiene practices. It is crucial to follow the instructions provided with the treatment and to wash all potentially infested items in hot water. If you find that over-the-counter treatments are not effective, or if you have persistent symptoms, it is advisable to consult a healthcare provider for further evaluation and treatment options.
