Menstrual period is delayed..?

Hello Doctor: I have missed my period for about a week.
In the past, I have experienced delays of over a month, so I didn't think much of it.
However, my eating habits have become strange recently: after eating, regardless of the amount, I feel a bit nauseous, as if something is stuck in my throat and I want to vomit.
I also experience the same sensation when I am too hungry, and strong greasy smells make me feel nauseous as well.
I visited a traditional Chinese medicine clinic and was prescribed herbal medicine, but since I'm not used to taking Chinese herbs, I only took them for about three days.
To date, I still do not feel any signs of my period coming.
I would like to ask the doctor if this could be a gastrointestinal issue, or if there is a possibility of pregnancy? Thank you, Doctor.

Delayed periods can be a source of concern for many individuals, and understanding the possible causes is essential for addressing any underlying issues. In your case, you mentioned that your period is about a week late, and you have a history of experiencing delays of over a month in the past. Additionally, you are experiencing gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, a sensation of food being stuck in your throat, and aversion to greasy foods. These symptoms can complicate the situation and may indicate various underlying conditions.

One of the most common reasons for a delayed period is pregnancy. If you are sexually active and there is a possibility of conception, it would be prudent to take a home pregnancy test to rule this out. Pregnancy can cause hormonal changes that lead to missed periods, and the gastrointestinal symptoms you are experiencing could also be related to early pregnancy, such as morning sickness.

However, there are several other factors that can contribute to a delayed menstrual cycle. Stress is a significant factor that can affect hormonal balance and lead to irregularities in your cycle. If you have been experiencing increased stress levels, whether from work, personal life, or health concerns, this could be a contributing factor.

Changes in diet and exercise can also impact your menstrual cycle. You mentioned that your eating habits have changed, and if you are not consuming enough calories or nutrients, this could lead to hormonal imbalances. Additionally, excessive exercise or sudden weight loss can disrupt your menstrual cycle.

Hormonal imbalances, such as those caused by conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or thyroid disorders, can also lead to delayed periods. If you have a history of irregular cycles or other symptoms such as weight gain, acne, or excessive hair growth, it may be worth discussing these possibilities with your healthcare provider.

Given your gastrointestinal symptoms, it is also important to consider whether there is an underlying digestive issue. Conditions such as gastritis, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), or food intolerances could be causing your nausea and aversion to certain foods. If these symptoms persist, it would be advisable to consult a gastroenterologist for further evaluation.

In your case, since you have already consulted a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner and received herbal remedies, it may be beneficial to follow up with a healthcare provider who specializes in Western medicine for a comprehensive evaluation. They can perform necessary tests, such as blood work to check hormone levels, and provide guidance on managing your symptoms.

In summary, while pregnancy is a possibility, there are numerous other factors that could be contributing to your delayed period and gastrointestinal symptoms. It is essential to take a holistic approach to your health, considering both physical and emotional well-being. If your period does not arrive soon or if your symptoms worsen, seeking medical attention is crucial to ensure that any underlying issues are addressed appropriately.
